Abiotic oil debunking is a regular thing around here. New members who have not done their homework bring it up as a solution to the worlds problems. Posting a reply uses more energy than will ever be generated by such a thing.

Extreme cold across Russia has cut oil output and sparked warnings of power cuts
Production; Extraction; Explorationjustgas writes "In the Western Siberian town of Surgut, in Russia's oil-producing heartland, temperatures have fluctuated between minus 30 and minus 51 degrees Celsius over the past week.

Oil production from the region fell by 200,000 barrels per day between Jan 10-16 as the extreme cold meant oil had frozen some oil wells solid, the Energy Ministry said.

Production traditionally declines in January and February due to the cold. But it has never fallen so sharply in recent years and the plunge could well damage production figures in the longer term.

"It is not as easy as one could think to restart an oil well even after the cold subsides. Sometimes you have to wait until May to fully restart a well," one industry analyst said.

Somehow, I never imagined that Russians would have trouble with -4F temps.

Leanan, what are you talking about? Minus 51 degrees Celsius = minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit

I meant this:

One small Moscow stock exchange suspended trading today when the city's temperature fell to 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit) below zero.

(I assume that's -20C, but still...it doesn't seem that cold for Russia in January.)

This is due to the possible power shortages. The population of Moscow has exploded. I am talking about a 30% increase over the last 5 years. However, the infrastructure has not been updated properly to match the population increase. So, voluntary blackouts are needed to avoid large-scale power failures.
