Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Japan Curbs Oil Imports From Iran on Concern Over Disruptions
Public Policy; Political and Legal News

Japan is curbing crude oil imports from Iran, its third-largest supplier, out of concern the standoff over the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program increases the risk of supply disruptions.

Imports from Iran tumbled 20 percent to 2.18 million kiloliters (37,614 barrels a day) last month, bringing the decline to 14 percent for the four months ended April 30, according to Trade Ministry data. Japan brought in more oil from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the ministry said in a report released in Tokyo today.

It should be common knowledge that Japan, as a country, is America's bee-yootch. No offense intended - it's a wonderful country and culture, but especially in terms of banking and corporate conduct, the US , via lots of entities, pulls the strings.

I imagine they were 'asked' to 'realign' their 'priorities'....to favor more US-approved vendors, further pressure Iran, whilst giving a plausible explanation.

Trouble is, oil is fungible. So it's not going to make much difference. Even oil from pre-2003 sanctioned Iraq was making its way to the US and other supposed off-limit markets via back-channel and black market dealings.
