A Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD Multiwagon 5 door estate driven by Alan Park won the Diesel Car Class in the recent MG Car Club - Irish Shell Economy Run, achieving an astonishing 90.51 miles per gallon. Even more remarkable was the achievement of Eoin Murray, driving a Fiat Punto 1.2 Multijet, which achieved 107 mpg -but took 3rd place. Murray, who races Alfa Romeos, was competing for the first time and had time penalties on the route, denying him outright victory in the class despite his amazing achievement.

The 2004 Economy Run covered 134.6 miles of very mixed driving conditions through Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare. As with all previous MG Car Club Economy Runs, drivers have no idea of their route until they are handed their instructions immediately before the Run starts.

The results reconfirm the claims made by Fiat Auto (who invented and pioneered Common Rail and later Multijet turbo diesel technology) that these engines can improve a car's fuel efficiency and reduce fuel bills, without sacrificing engine power. In fact Multijet engines, with far greater torque than equivalent-size petrol engines, can give cars extra performance capability in the 20-60 mph range.

Common Rail or Multijet engines are available across virtually the full range of Fiat and Alfa Romeo models. The 1.2 Multijet engine will be available shortly in the Fiat Panda and is now available in the Fiat Punto, Idea and Doblo. A 1.9 litre Multijet engine is also used in Alfa Romeo's 147, 156, Sport Wagon and GT ranges.

Let me get this straight, there are a bunch of people out their that are deliberately wasting fuel, to prove how frugal they are with it That has got to be the most flucked up reasoning I've seen so far.

At least motor sport has a reason to burn fuel whether you like it or not, but burning it to prove you can save it has got to be weird & should definately not be praised or commended !
