Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Hydrogen bomb
Hydrocarbon AlternativesIt's here! The energy miracle of the millennium, an amazing technological advance that will transform the way we live and the way the world works. When there is no more oil and all the gas is gone, we will get our power from press releases issued by government, oil companies and carmakers -- the Press Release Economy. Entire nations will be able to generate all the energy they need to keep their economies buzzing along in the fast lane by filling up on media announcements and marketing campaigns.

don't worry about the low return on energy, I'm sure with more government funding and research they can improve the ratio to 12:1 or even 16:1 in no time

Hey, paper is great. It's a low sulfur source of synthesis gas for methanol, and if you put it in a landfill you are taking carbon out of the ecology by way of forest absorbtion of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Terance Corcoran has been very harsh on the "peak oil cult" for a while. Here, he offers a criticism that is shared by the energy skeptics who are also skeptical of the future cheap oil (that very " peak oil cult" that he despises). This is a really fun read that I think is right on this time.

Little does Corcoran know that this "press release economy" is really a refection of the nervousness building up within the establishment about the energy situation. If I am wrong on this, then he must be expressing disappointed that powerful people are starting to lose FAITH in the infinite-resources/infinite-sinks/infinite-technology paradigm that he advocates.

Julian Simon, the high priest of faith-based economic theory, must be turning over in his grave right now at the erosion of FAITH happening.
