How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Fuel cell cars face bumpy road despite $60 oil
Hydrocarbon AlternativesRaxozanne writes:

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Astronomical costs for delivering hydrogen-powered cars and the network to run them mean clean vehicles are years away from competing against today's polluting rivals, even if oil prices stay at record highs.

Proponents of the technology still insist that 5 million to 10 million cars running on hydrogen-fed fuel cells and emitting only water vapour could be on the road within 15 years, with the number ballooning to 350 million by 2050.

But the dream will only come true if the companies driving the change can make fuel cells better and cheaper, while securing the billions of dollars needed to finance comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure at a time of stretched public coffers.

These are the supporters of hydrogen fuel cells and they admit that even by 2020, 99% of cars and trucks will still be buring petrol or diesel.

One of the things all H-powered automobile advocates gloss over is that the gas-powered automobile is not merely problematic because it burns a non-renewable fuel and emits pollutants in the process, but that it requires a large and nasty infastructure to support it. Whence, I would like to know, will come all of the steel, aluminum, etc to build these cars of the future?  And what of the availability of plastics? Presently, plastics play a vital role in vehicle weight reduction.  And where will we be getting the rubber to manufacture tires for these cars?  And what of the asphalt to maintain the roads?  My guess is that of the billions of the people on the planet who would like very much to have an automobile, only a privileged few will ever have an H-powered vehicle.
