I'm honestly not convinced it's worth messing with the galena. Wrap a couple of spare diodes in aluminum foil if you're truly worried about EMP.

We use ~ 1,100 gallons per year for space heating
and domestic hot water .....



In Virginia? I didn't use 1000 gal/year when I lived in Boston. Tighten up that house.

It is done. Typically using the waste heat from diesel gennys to make steam. It's hostage to the relative price of oil and coal. These days oil is way expensive relative to either coal or natural gas.
