I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

I hope this means I get a discount, because I only weigh around 145 pounds.

Famished, underweight supermodels would LOVE this plan, because they'd get to fly for free.

Jay Leno joked that the ...

Everyone knows that running the furnace expends energy directly, since energy (in the form of natural gas, heating oil, propane, wood, or other fuel) is needed for the furnace to work. But there's a ...

I think starving would be a bigger problem than freezing. Since learning about Peak Oil, I've kept my home warmer in summer and cooler in winter than in my Pre-Peak-Oil Awareness days. I've actually ...

I installed a programmable thermostat this past fall. For the setback periods, I set it to 55 degrees, as I don't need a comfortable temperature when I'm sleeping at (under the covers and not awake t ...

In 2004, I discovered dailykos.com. It's MUCH more informative than the popular news channels, but it's also MUCH more depressing. See the conundrum? It seems that happiness and knowledge are mutua ...

I've always felt an obligation to know what's going on in the world. But the more attention I pay to keeping up, the worse I feel. Conversely, the less I pay attention to what's going on in the worl ...

I've complained here before about buildings where excessive heat is used in winter and excessive air conditioning is used in summer.

Is it just me, or is this climate control abuse much more preval ...

Here's another sad irony about air conditioning: Everyone's favorite way to escape the heat can close off that very avenue for escaping the heat.

Does everyone HAVE to cool their homes down to 72 d ...
