Here we have the American publics spoonfed response to Peak oil. too much of the good oil soaked life rots the brain. One can only feel pity for poor fools such as he /she who has spouted such dribble without a clue what the true meaning of Peak Oil really is.

Oil is not a luxury simply because the Malawians cant afford it. Anyway, their society is not oil dependant. Oil is not even an addiction like cigarettes. Oil is the lifeblood of the West. We cannot simply reduce demand, at least not in the short term. The whole of the US economy is built on oil - yes we can give up our SUVs and long-haul flights, but we cannot so easily and quickly give up heating (our houses, heaters and coolers are very badly designed); fertilizer (our soils are degraded - it takes years to convert to organic); non-local non-seasonal food (without oil-based transport and refrigeration food needs to be grown locally and people will have to get used to very different food); also plastics, inefficient engines, road repairs etc etc etc. None of these problems are intractable - given sufficient will power and the acceptance of some big changes plus enough time, resources and energy - we can address all these issues. The projections suggest that time and energy are not on our side here! Change wont come form government as those with power are enjoying the oil party too much, and they'll be making money whatever happens. But is peak oil a myth to the little old lady who can no longer afford the luxury of heating?
