How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Old people are a very good source of information on how to get by
without energy. I am planning to visit several old gentleman so they
can explain me how to kill a pig and made food that will last for 4
years without chemicals or refrigeration, aslo what wild plants can be
eaten, how to preserve food etc, they are much better than books. I
will write it down with drawings and pass it along. Besides some can teach you good humor, is there anything better than beeing 80 and still crack up jokes??? Old people are bored and lonely and, generally speaking, they are seen as a nuisance rather than a source of good quality practical information, that may change after PO.

The only good website with practical info that I know is, besides thisone, www.inthewake.org

Get a job at your local convalesent home. It will give you perspective into what the world was like in the early 20th century, give the old people somebody to talk to, as well as give you a new grasp on what death is about. Plus, you make money while employed there too. I work at one. The only bad part I would say is dealing with bowel movements in areas other than the toilet. Also, most of them are half crazy, if not complely there.

Another way to make a comfortable environment for old people to share knowledge and teach young people is by setting up a local, community, low-key, money-free summer school or winter school.

It's not very hard to do, just a matter of making it happen. See details at http://homepages.globe.net.nz/ceeceegl/karameasummerschool.html
