How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Thanks for the welcome ubercynicmeister!

I found a lecture by Prof Bartlet on the site and played it for my fiance last night. He watched the whole thing and afterwards turned to me and said: So what is it going to take to get you to stop worrying about this?

So we started planning and making a list. I feel SO much better now. He feels as long as we have each other, we can face anything. He's a dreamer but I love him Wink

We've put off buying that new car he wanted and will put the extra money into our mortgage. I'm looking for a gov't job or something that is "crucial" enough that one of us will still be working if the economy crashes.

I just needed to "talking" less and "doing" more. Thanks for the help.

You have the most important thing there is--a partner who is willing to listen AND someone who loves you. Smile

That new car would have impressed your friends and maybe even the boss (clients?) but it would have distracted you from the hard work ahead. Which is finding lots of new friends who share you concerns and are willing to join together in a sustainable community that will share dwindling resources, love, and protection.
