doesnt look good for the city of detroit. i heard that with gm's slashing 30,000 jobs, it would affect 400,000 jobs either directly, or indirectly. now add fords 30,000 jobs. ouch . there isnt much manufacturing left in america, and when you take out cars and car parts, it is going to hurt. you cant run a country on service based jobs only. ask the u.k

It actually gets better. There's a lot of people out there who believe we can maintain a strong and sustainable economy if we all take turns selling overpriced real estate to each other! There's also another theory that states we can all (yes ALL of us) can get rich off the stock market if we simply just buy and hold.

At least that's the message that's comming from the masters of misinformation...aka mainstream media.

richard heinberg said in one of his interviews that america gained its world prominance in the 1800's because they were the worlds foremost oil exporter. we were the saudi arabia at one time. and 8 out of every 10 jobs were manufacturing jobs. but now, we are the worlds foremost oil importer and biggest debtor nation the world has ever seen. peak oil is the reason. im not sure now much longer the government can keep it from collapsing. If it wasnt for cheap money and people borrowing against the equity of their houses, and maxing out 2-3 credit card, the economy would have collapsed already. we are living in very interesting times

Despite monumental labor costs in Belgium, Ford Genk just got another 600 jobs assigned just this week. They've already recruited 300 people earlier this year.
I know 900 people is peanuts compared to 30.000, but it's a lot of jobs if you keep in mind we have a population of merely 6mil.
Ofcourse scouting China and India for building new plants doesn't have anything to do with erm... anything... Rolling Eyes

This is just the start of a viscious cycle. Those 30,000 that are loosing their good paying jobs will now be putting less money into the economy affecting other companies bottom lines, meaning there will be more layoffs elswhere. Once the dominoes really start falling this whole house of cards is going down.

Anybody with their heads not in their ass can see where we are headed and have been headed for a while. You can't keep laying people off from good paying jobs and replacing them with service jobs and have a good economy. Maybe good for the top 1% when the former middle class will all be willing to work for just a bite to eat. Shocked

The plant closings are not limited to Detroit.

Oklahoma city is losing an assembly plant and 2200 jobs are going there.

Assembly plants in Lansing Mich., Doraville, Ga., and Ontario, Canada are closing soon. Spring Hill, Tenn will partially close leaving one line running. Moraine, Ohio plant will lose a shift.

An engine facility in flint Mich will close. A power train facility in Ontario and metal centers in Lansing and Pittsburgh.

GM also will close three service and parts operations facilities in Ypsilanti, Mich., and Portland, Ore with another to be announced later.

Looks like Michagan will be hard hit. Sad

Reports are coming out that Ford will close 8 plants as well. I haven't seen where ford has made any announcement on this yet. Just they plane to make cuts.

So the announcements are 30,000 each. 60,000 high paying jobs and then all the support jobs that will follow quickly. Sad

Detroit could be the seen of the first riots. Sad

A friend and neighbor of mine works for NUMMI, the joint Toyota GM plant in Fremont, CA. He says he'll earn over 100 grand this year (incl OT) working on the light truck assembly line. When he mentioned this to me I thought to myself, 'you and your factory are probably seen by NUMMI management as a very well illuminated target for replacement.'

the old Christmas retail thing...

I think all that gets me through Christmas this year is my funnybone.
