It's given at my school, but the word is out that it's not required, and most kids take it just to get out of class. I've never heard of it being presented as required. _________________ American by birth, Muslim by choice, Southern by the grace of God! |

Aaron, I took the ASVAB in Houston back in 1988 and 1989. The teachers encouraged us back then to do it just keep our options open in case college did not work out. When I scored 93rd percentitle and had to beat back every branch with a stick. I seriously looked at going into the Army but decided it just was not for me. The calls stopped after the first and only firm No. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket |

| Aren't the ASVABs just a dumbed down(if that's possible) version of the SATs? |

| When I took the ASVAB back in '97 is was only the Senior class. We weren't exactly "required" to take it, but the school policy made it so that everyone took it. I don't remember exactly, but I think the choice was something like take the ASVAB or run laps around the football field for the duration. |

I dare the US Calvary to enlist me and my grey Arabian Stalion.
I demand full rank as Col. 10,000 men freed from Virginia's finist prisons, Comm block weapons and Air support.
I could end the war in 3 monthes tops.
Charging for clean up and disposal is extra.
No SATS or ASVAB for me. _________________ Eickhorn Daggers!

| I took the ASVAB back in 1991. I aced it, but they weren't all that eager for new soldiers back then, so no recruiter calls. I can't really remember how it was presented re: compulsiveness. I don't remember anybody refusing to take it, but I was a pretty patriotic little twit back then, so I probably would have been eager to take it even if it was optional. |

There are no recent studies, however, on the long-term cost benefit of replacing regular troops with contractors.
The downsizing of the U.S. armed forces has been substantial and relentless - from 2.1 million when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and the Cold War ended to 1.4 million today. More cuts are under consideration.
One tricky consequence is the free-market competition between the military and the private sector for people who have been trained - often at considerable cost - by the military. PMFs pay up to 10 times more than the military for very similar functions.
Special Forces expertise is in particular demand, and operators can make more than $200,000 a year, a good part of it not subject to U.S. income taxes.
To counter the lure of private contractors, the army has begun to offer re-enlistment bonuses of $150,000 for special forces soldiers who agree to stay on an additional six years.
| When will they run out of suckers willing to volunteer in the military and do the same work as mercenaries for a tenth of the pay? |

Well, PMF's only hire experienced and professional soldiers.
They generally have to go to the Army or have experience with arms and intelligence such as in the CIA or other intel agencies.
So don't expect all of our military ops to be conducted by PMF's anytime soon unless they are willing to pick up alot of non-Americans. Plus there will always be a few very professional patriotic soldiers willing to stick it out for old Uncle Sam. |

| I was just thinking that you'd think if they were on the frontlines and recognized that so many soldiers are defending the oil rigs/infrastructure in Iraq and hearing those disparaging pansy liberals (not my characteriztization) saying this is a war about oil that a lot of them would at least Google "oil" in the computers there. I mean, they even have blogs some of them so I think they use the internet too. And something like PO would bound to be spread around especially through them talking with each other. I saw this show once that showed the troops there and them talking about what they are doing. And one was talking about how we were there to maintain the American lifestyle and that that wasn't something that the talking heads would say but that's why they were there. He didn't mention PO, but it sort of relates. |

I remember Matt Savinar was offering his book free to armed forces members for quite a while. _________________ The battle to preserve our lifestyle has already been lost. The battle to preserve our lives is just beginning. |
