This is an interesting one .
"Sweden says it aims to completely wean itself off oil within 15 years - without building new nuclear plants."
The first occurrence that I have seen of TPTB at national level acknowledging the problems associated with PO and apparently committing to doing something about it.

| The fact that their worried about peak oil is interesting. I wonder if they realize just how hard replacing oil will be. I assume they hope to maintain the current status of living. Realistcally in order to do this they would have to force the way the majority of people live, like move them into small carless communities, make them grow and eat local food, make most of their own stuff etc. Could they, would they? |

In 2003, 26% of all energy consumed came from renewables, compared with an EU average of 6%.
they clearly have been thinking this more through then the average european country
now they have a head start and even then they'll still need 15 years to be oil-free, you can guess how screwed the countries with their 6% will be when tshtf |

Properly organised there will not be any foodproblems in Sweden, there are enugth farm and farmers in present. There is a lot of prime farmland, lots of woods, hydroelectrics, metalores of diffrent kinds, including about 15% of known uranium reserves world-wide.
everything could be pretty mutch ok if not for two things, Swden is not a world of its own, and the problems of Germany, Britan, france, netherlands will be our problems. And there is the massive, third-world immigration that the elites of sweden see as a nobel thing. totaly unneccacary and wil things a lot more difficult in the years to come. |

De-lurking to post for the first time: this is unbelievable! Clearly our once-oppressing neighbours are on the right track. (I live in Finland)
Quoting something I found to be of importance from the article above:
"The attempt by the country of 9 million people to become the world's first practically oil-free economy is being planned by a committee of industrialists, academics, farmers, car makers, civil servants and others, who will report to parliament in several months."
See the greatness of the networking here? industrialists and car makers are with the program from the start. I see this as a good thing, but the specific details are not mentioned and it will be interesting to see these as this story evolves.
Great!

Very impressive, good on them, this is the way to go!
I really hope this has an exemplary function Europe-wide...
It is not going unnoticed at least, today this made the frontpage of Spiegel Online (in German):

| I've always admired people in Scandinavia for their care about their own countries and care about ecology,I believe Sweden and generally Scandinavia will succeed, their political system is not so corrupt/spoilt as in other countries and society is open and innovative to new ideas.I was once in Sweden, it was like "everybody is dead,or what?" I've never seen such quiet and calm city. |

| Oil free economy is nonsense. They should be modest and say "less oil dependant economy". |

| Wolfeyes : Sure, but back there, we were not 6,5 billions on Earth. More over, i'm sorry but i hear this "oil-free economy" as some kind of business as usual message to medias, just as if oil is something than could be easily replace. Soon people will realize that oil is to this civilization what blood is to their body. |

| Sweden do not have any oilproduction. Move 15 years in to the future, and there migth not be any other options than to run the economy without oil. Better then figthing wars to get what will be left at that time. |

The goal is for every citizen to have an alternative to oil for all their energy needs:
"Our dependency on oil should be broken by 2020," said Mona Sahlin, minister of sustainable development. "There shall always be better alternatives to oil, which means no house should need oil for heating, and no driver should need to turn solely to gasoline." |
