Well, in any case they have a good reason. Save the earth, save the parrots! |

Read it again. It's save the "parrot", singular.
Just one per year, statistically. This has got to be some kind of joke or something. |

The only parrots worth talking about in this story are the galahs.
Aussies will understand. |

This is the government of John Howard we're talking about. Check out its record for sanctioning logging and woodchipping in environmentally sensitive areas, if you want to see some really fetid environmental credentials - plus its solid and irresponsible support for the US' stance on CO2 emissions.
The only idiots here, are those who actually believe the decision was reached in order to protect a species of rare parrot, rather than suppress competition against the oil and coal industries. This guy would sell toasted baby koalas on a stick, if he thought there was a dollar in it. |

I couldn't see the article, but I'm guessing from the comments that the reason for the refusal of the project was some type of parrot was going to be threatened.
Yeah, riiiight.
We really are a BANANA Republic, y'know: Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone.
In the case of "windfarms" I'm not impressed with the modern versions, as (I'm told) the turbine cannot turn into the wind, but is fixed in one direction.
C'mon, the Dutch had their windmills being able to turn into the wind and that was hundreds of years ago. Until the modern wind-farm proponents solve THAT problem, I will not be a supporter of wind-farms, sorry. _________________ .

Is this true or an urban myth? Old windmills had a "tail roter" which turned the sails into the wind. Modern wind generators have governors to stop them turning too fast, but did not know they could not turn into the wind. _________________ "Complex problems have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers." - Henry Louis Mencken |

Storm brews over wind farm fears
TWO more wind farms in Victoria, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, could be stopped because of their impact on rare bird species.
The news follows federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell's decision to halt a $220 million wind farm at Bald Hills, in South Gippsland, because it could kill "up to one" orange-bellied parrot a year.

Hole in one!!! The parrot is an excuse. One that it is hoped will make him more popular with the 'environmental' lobby. Fat chance, I say. His record in environmental issues is very clear. He's our very own neo-con, Bush toady. Can't wait till the next election. _________________ Kind regards, Katkinkate

The Australian Govt is clearly in bed with the coal companies... These things only turn at 20 RPM or so, hardly much of a threat to birds.

Completely incorrect. All modern turbines definitely rotate to face the wind, and also adjust the pitch of the blades to keep a constant RPM. The 'yaw' is controlled by a small wind vane, which feeds into the computer controller, which turns the 'head' (nacelle) of the turbine into the wind. Turbines also have a braking facility, whereby they can turn the blades into the wind and totally stop the turbine if the wind speed gets too high.
Have a look at the diagram halfway down this page. http://www.nrel.gov/wind/animation.html |
