Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Holy spit, I live in Minnesota and have met Don Shelby.

I think they should sit on this story until gas hits $3, it'll grab more ratings then.

edit: why does my post appear at tthe top?

The local Minneapolis CBS affiliate (WCCO) anchorperson, Don Shelby, has been interested in peak oil. Last fall, a friend of mine attended an educational event for arborists, and Shelby gave the keynote address on peak oil. He had the crowd riveted.

He is going to have a series on the coming energy crisis on WCCO News April 10 - 14th.

Minnesotans for an Energy Efficient Economy (ME3) is a local non-profit organization and they have info on their website ( http://www.me3.org/calendar.html ). Look under "Project Energy." Here is a snippet from the ME3 website: "Don Shelby and WCCO TV take on the energy crisis with a series of groundbreaking reports entitled, Project Energy. For the week of April 10, WCCO 4 News at 10 p.m. will devote expansive coverage of the world’s dwindling supply of oil and efforts here in Minnesota to develop alternatives."

The WCCO website is http://wcco.com. As of this morning, they have not yet posted any information on the series, but I suspect they will have web info once the series starts.

Shelby interviews Matt Simmons, Ken Deffeyes, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, President Carter, as well as local Energy activists Michael Noble and J Drake Hamilton of ME3.

I live in Minneapolis, MN, USA, myself.

I will be interested to see if this is more MSM "disinfotainment" or a real news story.

Shelby's colleague Paul Douglas has done terrific work here to get Global Climate Change taken seriously by the political establishment and the public at large. Don Shelby has contributed to that as well.

If the efforts made related to Global Climate Change are any indication, Shelby's work on "Project Energy" will have some real substance.

The most fascinating part of this is that Don Shelby (and Paul Douglas) have had long and successful careers in the "disinfotainment" industry and yet they appear to be talking about things of real substance and consequence, and with some real passion and reportorial expertise.

A bit of a miracle, if you ask me.

I'm really close to Mpls. myself...I'll have to check this out. I hope it doesn't turn into a 5 day ad for E85

The first segment in the series is now available on the WCOO website:

http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_100223211.html

Looks pretty good. Peak oil is explicitly mentioned. Many of the PO regulars were interviewed.

I appreciated their effort to insert a local Minnesota angle. Much better than just having an abstract discussion with far-off experts. Make it local, make it real!

WCCO has always been known for being the more "enlightened' and "tolerant" station in the cities, right?
