Light Sweet Crude Oil

Member Quotes
I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Just curious about the percentage of peakoil.com readers who actually have a stake in rising oil/gas prices. Please answer yes if you are invested long in oil/gas futures, oil/gas companies, oil/gas-based mutual funds etc. Basically you should answer "Yes" if you get a thrill when oil/gas prices rise and boost your portolio. For you $100 oil is like DOW 10,000.

Otherwise, please answer no.

Thanks for your cooperation!

since nov 2004.

it doesn't make me 'happy' though..

as where else is one going to make money...

I mean aside from working of course...

( alright, I lied, it makes me happy, and so does 600 gold, but in a 'oh, oh, this is going to get bad' kind of way!!!)

When I got some money from my family I invested a bit in BP. Knowing about peak oil and rising oil prices, it looked like a bit of protection against rising inflation (and I know inflation is supposed to be under control, but my supermarket receipts say otherwise).

I'm very happy of my decision. I invested on January and I can already see some profits!

Yes!

It's been most profitable, and I'm delighted to see the prices of the underlying commodities go up.

And, since I despise traffic, the prospect of cost forcing some of my fellow motorists to use bicycles is a further source of pleasure.

Peak Oil - ya gotta love it!

Nope. I dont trust the stock market at all. To me it looks a lot like gambling, if you get it wrong you lose your money Smile

I prefer to keep my money 'safe' by converting it into useful things as soon as I can. I do have some gold though.

You mean in the same way as getting medical insurence and then hoping you get in an accident, so you get your money's worth, and even more than you paid. And be thrilled that you made this investment and are now better off than if you had not gotten the insurance, but still would have had the accident.

Or do you mean if I am net long oil and gas? Because I would not know that. I have money in a savings account at a bank, and I don't exactly know how it is invested. Also my country is a NG exporter, so I benefit from that in a way. However I am also a NG consumer, and I buy all sorts of things that probably required oil and gas to produce and transport.

And my investment in renewable energy also seems to rise when oil rises, but so do the production costs.

But I get the impression that it is perfectly fine to buy oil and burn it just for the fun of it (in a SUV for example). But it is bad to buy oil now and save it, to burn it later for good use, or to sell it to someone else who needs it more. It depends on what I will do with it. If I use it wisely, then maybe you have got a stake in me investing in oil, and that way indirectly you have a stake in rising oil/gas prices. I could go out and buy an SUV today and fill it up and drive it around just for fun (I won't though), you probably would not benefit from that.

If higher oil/gas prices mean that we start using it more wisely, so in a way that benefits us more in the future, then we all have a stake in higher oil prices. So it all depends on what those who buy it do with it or with the profits they make. Do they keep it all to themselves, or do they invest it in a way which benefits a lot of people, including you?

I suppose I should chime in here too. I'm not invested in anything. This is mainly due to the fact that I'm a listless, wandering character with almost no interest in money or possessions. Not that I have reasons for it -- I'm just that way, and always have been.

So I voted no.

I'd be interested in hearing why other people haven't invested in oil yet. No money?

Couldn't investing in oil and gas be risky because of demand destruction? I was thinking I should invest more in solar and physical precious metals.

Yes – I have shares in sector mutual funds for natural gas, energy, energy service, gold mining, and natural resources.

I also have shared in DBC ETF (Deutsche Bank Commodity Index Tracking Fund), which his 35% based on the current price of crude oil and 20% based on heating oil. In addition, I have holdings in PBW (Alternative Energy EFT). I also have a gold EFT, GLD, and some shares in a junior uranium mining company.

I am long everything.

My portfolios (taxable and non-taxable) have been going nuts that last week or so.

While my underlying belief is that eventually things will get so bad that investments won’t matter much, but during the early part of the peak and decline there are huge opportunities out there to make plenty of money.

Dropping of prices would require demand destruction to reduce usage at a rate greater than world wide crude oil decline rates. To date, there has been no evidence that oil usage has dropped, even as we are approaching oil at $70.

Prices of crude oil could hold steady or even increase, while total gallons used could drop. Increases in price, while selling a lower volume, means in increase in margin. Consequently, oil companies could still have record profits and earnings with demand destruction occurring.

Of course, there is a remote possibility that a government could implement a plan that would cause significant demand destruction (e.g. rationing program). But political risk is a risk to consider with most investments (e.g. look at the political risk an investor would have had to consider when investing in a tobacco company in the 90s) . But, there also is a chance for significant upside until such an event occurs.

If you invest in traditional energy (oil/natural gas), you should also invest in alternative energies as a hedge. There is a great alternative energy EFT that trades under the symbol PBW.

Yes, in Canadian companies with exposure to the oil sands of Alberta.

Yes, as of yesterday. If I'd had the cash I would have bought futures last year and made a killing. As it is I snapped up some USO as soon as I had the opportunity.

Yup for some time now and have been rolling in the dough. The key to success in the group is buying companies with fast increasing reserves or those whose reserves are grossly discounted.

No. Grains, metals and Forex only. Haven't screwed up the balls to pony up the 5 to 10 grand IMM. Not worth my while when all my other positions have been behaving themselves so nicely as of late.

I would like however, to grab a HU-M06 or two this thursday before the long weekend should there be some profit taking before the long weekend.

I'm toying with the idea of going long on the Oct-Nov contracts as a "hurricane hedge/gamble/shits n' giggles" sort of thing.
