Light Sweet Crude Oil

Member Quotes
I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Do you know what is really insane? Oil crosses over 70 and the DOW is up around 200. The human race never ceases to amaze me. I hope that I manage to hold on for a few more years... The show should be (what is the word I'm looking for - astounding and yet extremely sad at the same time)... Hmm?

He was confused with the "water into wine" miracle, wouldn't you need to distill the wine to run a car on it?

Oil is not going to run out.

Simple fact is that we've done mostly land drilling, with some offshore drilling.

Even in this insane scenario we completely run out in twenty years, there is still the fact we can drill in the oceans.

Oh, right, you forgot about the oceans.

Further, you fail to take into account that in the next ten years we'll have viable alternative fuel sources.

Jesus Christ. I'm tired of this paranoid, end of the world crap. You folks are almost as bad as the nuclear war people.

You actually registered to say THAT? My god... mass self-delusion is so hard to watch sometimes...

This is more than just a fuel problem. It is much bigger than that, it's a societal problem, an entrenchement of bad ideas. Not to mention that most of the food you see on your store shelf was grown on huge petrochemically-dependent corporate farm that derives both pesticides and fertilizers from oil. We cannot support our population, in these numbers, any other way than this at this point. Alternative fuels can't change that fact.

Modern society runs on cheap, available oil, much as your body runs on water. If you were forced to drink syrup instead of water for the rest of your life, it would be a very short life indeed. That is (simplistically) what is happening. You may be able to get lots of oil out of the middle of the ocean, but it ain't gonna be cheap, or of high quality. Society has refused to accept the reality of its predicament so geology will force us to do so.

What, praytell, is paranoid about that?

Is there a "Troll Of The Year" award? If so, common_sense has won it!

Common_sense: NOT.

What you lack in argument you make up for in blind arrogance, but you are a great example to those of us on this forum who needed a reminder of how ridiculously moronic and uninformed most people are about this topic. For this reason I thank you for wandering in and taking a crap in the pool.

Actually, no. Campbell takes not just the oceans into account, but a few more exotic sources of oil that you probably hadn't even known existed.

Name them.

Nuclear war is technically possible, and has been proved to work (a couple of Japanese cities were the test). That it isn't implemented is a matter of politics. I think it's valid to worry about the possibility of nuclear war.

The difference with peak oil is that no amount of politics can change the amount of oil in the ground.

I think common_sense deserves a round of applause. He has demonstrated the sense that is, unfortunately, common.

Doh! you killjoy! I'd really like it if common_sense was for real and not a troll..

He/she does however serve as a reminder that the ignorance and stupidity of about half of humanity constitutes a danger to the existence of humanity as a whole. Like the 48% of Americans who think it would be a good idea to bomb Iran.

Does anybody even have the remotest idea what the fallout effects are when you whack a uranium enrichment plant?

I think that was a real post... common_sense's cute little diatribe represents the almost universal knee-jerk denial response of those confronted with the issue of peak-oil for the first time, whether they are intelligent people or not.

That said, I sure do wish he/she would come back and answer some of the fine rebuttals levied against his statement.

Sorry, but those are not the words of Paul. He was 'quoting' a prevalent attitude at the time (maybe Epicureans). In other words, forget about any kind of afterlife - just do it (Nike)!

It was Paul's first letter to the Corinthians C15 v 32 and his was quoting from Isaiah C23 v 13.

That aside the point about needing a greater faith than that of being religious came from an article in the UK Sunday Times magazine a few months ago discussing the potential coming 'Dark Age'.

My point is if you are so convinced in yourself and cannot see the issues and problems that are becoming evident - you best make the most of it while you can.

Karl,

Quite right! Thanks for the x-reference to Isaiah.

I was just trying to point out that he wasn't advocating that lifestyle, just trying to use that as a counterpoint...

In other words, if the Christian beliefs were just nonsense, why go through all the trouble (and persecution) - might as well party on like everyone else (very loose paraphrase - my apologies)

The "show" is going to be people loosing their houses, their jobs, masses of people migrating from the sunbelt, kids starving. Bread lines. Riots. Very dramatic. It's a show I'd rather not see and I wish like hell I didn't have a ticket.
