This is the POINT:
Americans are NOT facing the problem of peak oil.
Americans are NOT facing the problem of global warming/climate change.
Americans are NOT facing the problem of angry global opinion. |
It's those evil terrorists that's the only problem Americans are facing.

Yup, at some level there has to be Americans in the know who make up all the crazy BS.

With the recent implementation of the Kyoto protocol, how have you (Your country etc.) been effected?
Barbara from italy tell us that they had a “10 cents per liter, about 40 USD cents per gallon, of new gasoline taxes to finance a) ecological public transport b) incentives to buy electric and lpg cars c) incentives to buy new scooters.”
Form a PO perspective that is a good thing.
I know its early but I think we will have more to add to it in the coming weeks and months. Lets keep this thread going

Not me personally, but the country has seen something nice. We're finally building more nuclear power! That would've been impossible to push through the parliament without Kyoto. |

I gather you don't live in California. Or do we not count as part of the USA? link

| California = ecotopia? My memories from the Golden State include the sprawl along El Camino Real / US-101. San Francisco itself is much better (it is actually my favorite U.S. city), but it still lacks a good public transportation system. I think Portland, OR represents the ideal of a city built on a human scale. |

Well john the US did not sign the protocols. That bill your article talks about is California’s attempt to cut emissions (which is NOT the same as Kyoto Protocol). So the US (California included) is not affected by it.
Common guys lets stay on topic (this thread is not about which American city has the best public transport) |

| Kyoto sounds like a complete waste of time and effort to me. It's an impossible problem to solve, because people will never make the sacrifices necessary. The stumbling block is introducing changes that might actually cost jobs or adversely affect the economy, they just aren't prepared to do it. Combined with the fact that countries like China and India aren't required to reduce emissions, and I actually find myself agreeing with the Australian Government when they say it's practically worthless. |

well i find that kyoto will make little difference as it doent go far enough. however the city of perth is very peak oil aware infact on there govt envionment department website the mention peak oil and over the last few years have upgraded most bus services built new raillines and electifyed them and bulid new high speed DMUs for the long distance lines. also 85% of freight from eastern australia is railed to perth
remember Perth is resonsiable for an area of 2,500,000 sq km or an area about the size 3rd of the USA land area with only 2.5 million people on it and has very rich mineral reserves like nat gas and iron ore and urainim and gold etc. so at least one place in the world seems to be making an effort to do something about peak oil |

'Africa Left Out in Cold in Carbon Credits Market'
The World Bank has accused the European Union (UN) of erecting a trade barrier to keep African countries out of the billion-dollar carbon trading market. Senior World Bank official Ken Newcomb said at the climate change conference in Montreal this week that the EU's emissions trading rules discriminated against Africa because forestry projects did not count towards carbon credits. The EU has promised to reform its policy next year. link |
