Wilkins Ice Shelf hanging by its last thread
The Wilkins Ice Shelf is experiencing further disintegration that is threatening the collapse of the ice bridge connecting the shelf to Charcot Island. Since the connection to the island in the image centre helps to stabilise the ice shelf, it is likely the break-up of the bridge will put the remainder of the ice shelf at risk.

Global Warming: Top 10, Again

WASHINGTON (AP) — Earth scored another Top 10 finish in June — climate wise.
It was the eighth warmest June on record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Wednesday.
And the first six months of the year were the ninth warmest since record keeping began in 1880, NOAA's National Climatic Data Center reported.

The planets average temperature for June was 60.8 degrees Fahrenheit, 0.9 degrees warmer than average for the month.
For the January to June period, the combined global land and ocean surface temperature was 57.1 degrees, which is 0.8 degrees above the 20th century mean.

Adding Lime To Seawater May Cut Carbon Dioxide Levels Back To Pre-industrial Levels

Quote:
Scientists say they have found a workable way of reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere by adding lime to seawater. And they think it has the potential to dramatically reverse CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere, reports Cath O'Driscoll in SCI's Chemistry & Industry magazine.

Shell is so impressed with the new approach that it is funding an investigation into its economic feasibility. 'We think it's a promising idea,' says Shell's Gilles Bertherin, a coordinator on the project. 'There are potentially huge environmental benefits from addressing climate change -- and adding calcium hydroxide to seawater will also mitigate the effects of ocean acidification, so it should have a positive impact on the marine environment.'

Oh fer crying out loud! You make lime by heating limestone to drive off the CO2! Unless you sequester that CO2, which takes energy, all you are doing is dumping CO2 in the air and removing it from the water! Net gain zero!

Tanada, Your criticism is mentioned in the article.
Quote:
Kruger says: 'There are many such places -- for example, Australia's Nullarbor Plain would be a prime location for this process, as it has 10 000km3 of limestone and soaks up roughly 20MJ/m2 of solar irradiation every day.'
The process of making lime generates CO2, but adding the lime to seawater absorbs almost twice as much CO2. The overall process is therefore 'carbon negative'.
'This process has the potential to reverse the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere. It would be possible to reduce CO2 to pre-industrial levels,' Kruger says.

However, I do acknowledge that this is still a work-in-progress. If you have any solutions, then you could contribute to http://www.cquestrate.com mentioned at the end of the article.

Arctic becomes an island as ice melts
Quote:
The North Pole has become an island for the first time in human history as climate change has made it possible to circumnavigate the Arctic ice cap.

The historic development was revealed by satellite images taken last week showing that both the north-west and north-east passages have been opened by melting ice.

Prof Mark Serreze, a sea ice specialist at the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) in the US said the images suggested the Arctic may have entered a "death spiral" caused by global warming. "The rate of change is clearly faster than nearly all the models predict, which has huge implications for climate change and how to tackle it."

Meanwhile Prof James Lovelock, of the University of Oxford, has claimed "planet-scale engineering of the climate" may have to be attempted to counter global warming.

The last thing in the world we need is for Humanity, which can't even accurately predict Polar climate change from year to year, attempting geoengineering on the scale you would need to have a real impact.

Lovelock needs to bite his tongue right off for even suggesing it. We got ourselves into this situation with our arrogance, and arrogance is the last thing we need to excercise if we are to survive.

Yeah, elsewhere I've seen Lovelock equating humans micromanaging the climate to goats tending to a garden. I don't know what's getting into him here, but this stuff is driving lots of people a bit nuts.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Cutting your foot off because it is stuck in a bear trap is only a good idea if you will die otherwise. Trying to 'manage' geoengineering is the equivalent of cutting your own foot off without knowing how to properly tie a tourniquet to prevent yourself from bleeding to death.

Geoengineering is irrelevant. Foot is already cut off with blunt and dirty tool.

Now you are only trying to stop bleeding and you are pouring more and more of iodine (alcoholic solution of I2) on your wound while gangrene is developing. All what you can hope for are additional chemical burns. Very Happy
