I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Well, I think HK is much more sustainable than Pheonix or LA.
The city is so compact, and there are only 500,000 cars for a city of 7 million people.
Everyone uses those moving sidewalks or takes public transport.

Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah
Seriously, why on earth would you do something like that to such a piece of architecture? _________________ "He who makes no mistakes isn't trying hard enough" Genghis Khan

Good Lord, could that building actually have been that dirty? What city is that? I never want to even visit it! _________________ "Thank you for attending the oil age. If I recall correctly, the caption where I found the image read "power washing facade in NYC" or something very similar. For all I know, that could be a hundred years of soot, grime and nasty pollution particles in general. Certain cities have filthy air - I don't think NYC is particularly bad in this respect. The worst I've ever seen in person is probably Bangkok. I vividly recall sitting on my hotel bed picking very nasty black boogers from my nose.

Pittsburgh had a lot of the city cleaned because it looked like that. Some old bridges and buildings still wear the stains of it's the steel and coal smoke belching past. In the 1930's Pittsburgh was known as the Smokey City. That was when Pittsburgh had a steel industry, no environmental regulations and coal was king.

I feel pretty dumb now, it appeared to me that they were trying to give it a more modernistic/sinister look by painting over the brickwork. _________________ "He who makes no mistakes isn't trying hard enough" Genghis Khan

No no, I could see how you might think they could be painting it black if you didn't know the history or think of the history. Also there are a lot of clubs where they start by ruining the good looks of a building to make it more modern. One bar I was in painted the walls to look like the plaster was falling down. Shabby sheik being the new modern. Funny thing, with peak oil that may be the future of a lot of architecture...

I like this picture from the beginning of the oil age for a number of reasons, but mainly it's because colorized old prints like this one helps dispel one of my favorite delusions: Some very irrational part of me likes to imagine that WWI was fought in a black and white world where everyone moved in a jerky staccato at twice the speed of modern men, possibly in complete silence. Seeing that those pilous actually had blue uniforms, and that their world was as colorful and real as mine does something profound to how I view history. The fact that it's just the effort of someone putting color to an old black and white photo is of no importance to my irrational self.
This one makes it obvious where lots of rich people live, and how much energy we're using to light up the dark. Africa does indeed look like the "dark continent". Also, my eyes wander to Australia, and I recall what the night sky looked like in the outback. Light pollution is the curse of us modern stargazers.
IMO this is good art, and as such it requires no comment.

This image says so much about the absurdity of life in the USA. This guy says he needed to exercise his dog before going to the gym himself! Seattle Times Day in Pictures
