Drifter-

I've heard conflicting reports on the BPD from that facility granted only an additional 25,000 BPD, but it all adds up.

I also believe that this production was all light sweet crude, can anyone confirm?

Sorry, I can't confirm. I am just going by what the previous news article said.

120,000 bpd of Nigerian oil knocked off line

Quote:
Chevron Corp. said Saturday that a breached Nigerian pipeline has prompted the company to shut down its onshore oil production.

Nigerian media reported that militants had sabotaged the pipeline in the southern Niger Delta late Thursday. But the region's most-potent armed group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, told The Associated Press it was not involved.

U.S.-based Chevron said in a statement Saturday that it shut off its onshore production after the pipeline breach to protect the environment, but gave no firm figures on how much production would be lost. Oil industry officials said the loss would be around 120,000 barrels per day.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, which is known as MEND, attacked a remote offshore facility run by Royal Dutch Shell on Thursday, underscoring the vulnerability of Africa's biggest oil producer.

That attack slashed about 200,000 barrels per day of Nigerian crude oil production, adding to the 20 percent of production already shut down by militant attacks.

So, in the past few days, it appears that at least 456,000 bpd oil production has been knocked off line. Not good.

Many eastern US refineries have basically set up their operations to use Nigerian oil, mainly because of the high amount of gasoline that can be refined from each barrel of Nigerian oil.

So we will be able to roughly verify in a few weeks or so just how much Nigerian production is shut in.

It may be a bit early to predict shortages, but keep in mind the US barely had enough gasoline to get by last year. So only a small drop in imports may have a big impact on gasoline supplies.

Colombian oil pipeline closed by attacks

Colombia's Cano Limon-Covenas oil pipeline has been closed by rebel bomb attacks carried out on Saturday and Sunday, a source at state petroleum company Ecopetrol told Reuters.

"The pipeline has been paralyzed by the two attacks," said the source, who asked not to be named.

The pipeline, which has capacity to carry 225,000 barrels per day, was transporting an average of 96,000 bpd from Arauca province to the Caribbean coast.

The country's (Nigeria) white-collar oil union began a strike against Chevron today that may stop up to 350,000 barrels a day.

About 922,000 bpd new shut ins for North Sea, Nigeria, and Colombia if the strike really does close down an additional 350,000 bpd. These shut in numbers are seriously starting to add up.

Total Starts Several Units at Leuna Oil Refinery
By Nidaa Bakhsh

June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Total SA, Europe's largest oil refiner, started several units at its Leuna plant in eastern Germany after a seven-week halt for maintenance.

``They have started to restart the different units,'' Burkhard Reuss, a Paris-based spokesman, said by telephone today, without identifying the units. The 227,000-barrel-a-day refinery was shut May 3 for work that is carried out every five years.

The maintenance work cost about 200 million euros ($311 million) and comprised unit and equipment inspections, Total said in a statement April 29. Fuels including gasoline, diesel and gasoil were stockpiled before the closure.

MUMBAI, June 12 (Reuters) - India's leading petrochemical producer and refiner, Reliance Industries Ltd, will commission its new refinery and Krishna-Godavari Basin gas fields in 3-6 months, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said on Thursday.

The 580,000 barrels a day refinery is being built by unit Reliance Petroleum Ltd (RPET.BO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), 5 percent owned by Chevron, in Jamnagar in the western state of Gujarat.

The Krishna-Godavari basin is off India's east coast.

OF2 - those aren't what I'd call problems! Very Happy I've thought for a while it'd be nice to have a thread on refinery builds/expansions. Might make a nice Wiki page, too, or you could update the first page of a thread here.

I've actually thought of that, but I'm not sure announcements of stuff like that would make a whole thread worthwhile. You'd have maybe a dozen or two announced new refineries or expansions a year, plus maybe some updates. Would that really be worth an ongoing thread?

*shrugs*

But if anyone thinks it would be a good idea, I could start such a thread. I do know of several expansions in addition to the ones I posted above. Who knows, maybe there'd be more than I suspect.

BP is having start-up problems at Thunder Horse.

Quote:
Yet, in the past few years, the project has suffered welding problems that forced BP to pull up the subsea infrastructure; backwards valves that allowed water to enter buoyancy tanks during Hurricane Dennis, causing the platform to list precariously; and the discovery that more than 100 anodes, anti-corrosive metal structures weighing up to 700 pounds each, had dropped off or required removal from the platform.

Then, as BP geared up to start the initial four wells that were planned to bring the field to production last month, the Financial Times learned it had discovered problems with three of them.

“Rarely does a project go off without a hitch, but this is not normal,’’ said Kenneth B Medlock III, fellow in energy studies at the James A Baker III Institute for Public Policy. He said: “This sort of news will not be taken well by the market. I think what we are seeing is the result of an industry that is stretched to its limits in terms of qualified personnel, expertise and resources.”

Each well could take up to 30 days to repair.

Total Shuts Nine Units at Port Arthur Oil Refinery in Texas

Quote:
Total SA, Europe's largest oil refiner, said it shut nine units at its Port Arthur refinery in Texas and will restart them after 72 hours.

The shutdowns began yesterday at 6 p.m. local time and are scheduled to end at 6 p.m. on July 12, according to a filing with state regulators. The affected units were 804, 805, 810, 819, 822, 823, 824, 825 and 836.

The reasons for the shutdown and names of the units weren't stated in the filing. The closure resulted in the release of pollutants including carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide.

The plant can process about 240,000 barrels of crude oil a day, according to U.S. Energy Department data.
