The industry grew in a time when energy efficiency was not even considered. People have only just began to wake up. Already new 'green' hardware designs are showing the potential for massive increases in efficiency.
I think this is a good point.
Pushing data around by moving heavy electrons isn't the best possible solution for computing. It isn't even really a good solution, it is just an easy one. Now that we are finally seeing some solid research systems for light based computers, this all can change. If we were running up against these energy/heat limits in a LIGHT based system, I'd say we would be screwed.
If we restrict Moore's Law to the original meaning of electric transistors per chip, then the video's argument holds. But as computing does not require electricity or transistors AND as we know that we will have to abandon the "push the electron" model due to physical limitations anyway, I just don't see computer energy use as being any sort of grand limit to IT in any way.
I'm personally much more worried about parts distribution, theft, etc. due to other effects of Peak Oil. _________________ EntropyFails

IT will not go down without a fight. That's where the braintrust of the world is. That's where all the innovation is taking place. Obviously some mistakes were made (like Intel's power-hungry x86 architecture) but when necessary they can adapt quicker than any other industry (certainly quicker than the auto industry or energy utilities). Computer advancement (which carries with it greater efficiencies) far outpaces development in other fields (like power generation).
Not only that, but it's seen as too high a priority to LET go down. Remember that the internet was designed to survive a nuclear attack. (The way we're headed, it might actually have to.) Heck, we are trying to build laptops for the 3rd world! If some starving african can get onto a mesh network, we've got a LONG way to go before we have to panic.
Not only that, but there is so much technology that people just throw out that even if no more computers were ever built we'd probably be able to salvage enough to get by for generations.

For some odd reason IT always figures they are on top of the heap. They never helped me at work. Since when did the idea of using Email develop for co-workers within the same room. I say shut down the A/C and let em melt.
What a scam.
Computers are tools. Problem is "control" Where's my can of coke. Looks like it got spilled on the computer and must have shorted out the system. Good riddens............

My best friend is a trainee database adimistrator with a masters degree relating to his field of work. How secure do you think his job is? And is there any danger of his job being outsourced to Chindia?
