| petrol is still at $1.2? per lier. with crude at more than US $ 90 a barrel - this is strange. I don't know how much taxes we pay here, can't be a lot, but the oil must be transported refined transported once again. |

We pay quite a bit of tax on petrol. Around 50%.
We've been spared high petrol prices by the rising value of the Australian dollar. It's currently over US$0.91.
Last year it was around US$0.72. _________________ "I've seen the future, brother, it is murder."

Australians will start bleating when they're paying $2 liter for petrol. _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, Shit floats"

A fairly simple calculation shows that if the $AUD had stayed at $US=0.75 then we'd be paying $AUD 1.80 a litre.
Note the $AUD is headed downwards at the moment and is/was ~ $US=0.89. Now depending on where the currency speculators drive the little Aussie Dollar things may get much worse. |

| Prices are bound to worsen in the near future as we import increasing amounts of expensive oil to make up the shortfall from declining domestic production, and or when the resource boom busts. Of course once there are actual shortages all bets are off as to where the price of petrol might settle from day to day, no matter how well the "little Aussie battler" is doing by then. |

In Queenstown New Zealand, we are currently paying $1.81 for premium petrol. The prices have fluctuated between $1.50 - 1.84 since 2005.
We're being protected this time by the strong kiwi / weak US dollar, for now.
Although, when crude breaches the $100 dollar mark, we may be in for quite the price hike. _________________ Well Flickr me...

Seen it briefly above $1.50 a litre in Melbourne. From various threads I've read recently expect it may hit $1.60-$1.80 in the next few months before easing back to $1.20-$1.40.
Then when the next up cycle hits we may get to $2.00+ which is going to put a lot of people into shock. |

The breaching of the $100 per barrel mark pushed local prices up to $1.83 per litre, 1 cent short of the record.
Yet again, we have the exchange rate to thank for not paying $2 a litre. _________________ Well Flickr me...

| Hmm, petrol was 1.759 here in CHCH, and the story on stuff gave the impression that that was the price all over the country. They're talking about the cheaper type, though. |

Here in Brissie it's still around 1,30. At the moment the crude price is stable and will maybe dropping due to the US recession.
Our car is so rusty that it will brake down within some month. In normal times one would watch out for a new (old) one, but now? I really have no idea. |

You can add 5c on to anything stuff mentions as that is the price in the larger cities, like CHCH. 30 mins away from Queenstown is Kingston, and they are still getting stung $1.89 for 91, and that's after the recent drop below $1.80 for us. Quite rude really. _________________ Well Flickr me...
