| There are two stubborn stations near me that are selling at $3.97 and $3.99. I think they sell their gas at cost and make their profit selling cigarettes and coffee. Every other station is over $4.00 now. |

OK, guys and gals. Help me understand something. In my locale, regular unleaded sells for about $3.80 (ish) and has been at that level for probably the last month. I've noticed the price of gas increases within a day or two of when the price of crude increases. If crude remains stable, the price of gas doesn't move.
I know it takes some time for the oil to go through the refining and delivery process, but I'm not seeing the consistent increase in gas prices I expected.
It just seems strange that the price of gas doesn't slowly and steadily rise as the increasingly more expensive crude is processed through the system.
Maybe retailers are hoping the psychological impact of rising crude prices diverts attention from them raising gas prices a nickel or a dime at a time. Maybe I just don't understand the market forces at work here. |

I think you understand that wholesale gasoline is a commodity and is traded separately from oil. If the inventory for gasoline is high then the price for it will stay low until the inventory goes down. The refineries will operate at a loss for a while but will not continue to refine as much oil into gasoline until it regains a profitable margin. They can make diesel instead. Pup55 updates a thread regarding refinery margins and it is very thorough on the topic. In the long term , the fact that crude comprises 60-some percent of the cost of gasoline will turn the price of gasoline higher but it may take some time to work through inventories. |

Is gasoline a toxic waste that Big Oil sells?
A loss leader, that almost gets in the way of "naptha" type
products? |

3.5650, pretty strong gain today of +20/c. Now, all we need is a little storm brewing in the Gulf and $5.00 (nationally) for retail unleaded will be passed this summer. |
Back up to 3.5430 today. Not quite a record for RBOB. |

New record at 3.5850! Still a slow boil for the frogs. Hurricanes before long, though. |

I smell a jump in gas prices. I wonder if it'll happen later today or Monday. Still stuck at 3.99 here. _________________ "Oil is going up because we use too much oil, and the capacity to replace reserves is dwindling"

Gasoline hits fresh national record before July 4 holiday
| Quote: | The national average price for a gallon of regular gas rose to an all-time high of $4.098 from $4.092 the day before, a daily survey by motorist group AAA showed Thursday.
Gas prices are now 3% higher than they were last month and nearly 39% higher, or almost $1.15 more, than year-ago levels. |

RBOB hitting almost 3.60 and regular still available here in NM at 3.89... How can that be?
