Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Could you post this to the Diesel fuel thread, its lieing dormant around here somewhere waiting for action.

Gas prices jumped a nickel yesterday. First time in a long time. We had been at 3.02...now 3.07... Last year we were down to $3 around this time. Wonder what next Feb holds!

Front-month (March) RBOB gasoline is at $2.58. I think that is record territory again. April, May, and June contracts have all broken $2.70 at this moment. Alon refinery or more than that?

Seems to be a record, and I expect a retail average US price record within months - if not weeks.

The Alon refinery, per company officials this morning, is indefinately closed. The other factor today seems to be a growing opinion that OPEC will cut March output. This is actually comfirmed by a lesser amount of tankers being hired for oil exports in March.

However gasoline is also being pushed higher by a sharp rise in the price of blending components needed for summer gasoline (needed in March in some southren US locations). 15% to 30% of the gasoline mixture in 'summer' are blending components.

As you guys predicted last summer, looks like the summer of '08 is going to get very interesting.

And that was before the Alon closure.

Oh. crap.

Well, I'm impressed:

Those are some seriously healthy spikes. Nothing like a thunderous refinery blast to get peoples' attention.

We've had refinery problems and not much has happened... in fact, I don't quite understand why we're seeing these 100$ spikes. January production was 87 mbd, demand was steady, new giant wells being found... beats me.

Perhaps because it wasn't.

Yet predictions were that demand would be down.

Not nearly enough to make up for depletion, and even if there was it takes years to bring new production on-line.

I think it's increasingly clear that the recent up trend in production was something of a mirage, the forecast OPEC cuts imply that their boost was temporary and unsustainable, meanwhile back months production figures are getting revised downwards.

Prices in dolar / gallon, quoted from Weekly Retail Premium Gasoline Prices (Including Taxes)
Code:

Date    Belgium France Germany Italy  Netherlands   UK       US
2/19/96 3.94    3.89   3.97    3.94   4.27          3.03     1.27
2/18/08 7.93    7.52   7.70    7.58   8.59          7.67     3.27

I love the comparison (forgive me for the offtopic).

In St. Louis today, gas was hovering the $3 per gallon mark. Over in Illinois, it was around $3.15. Diesel in Illinois was between $3.50-$3.70.

3.18 here. What I don't understand is that we have the greatest gas inventory on hand since the early 90s. Yet with saying that the price of gas keeps going up? Is it the dollar? Is it 100 dollar crude? Its not because of enough supply thats for sure.
