Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Here's some cool gadgets I've picked up.

Steri-pen portable water purifier. Purifies water from questionable sources fast and effectively. Costs about 100 bucks.

Coast LED flashlight. Bright beam, durable housing. This specific model has a run time of 400 hours on 3 C batteries! Costs around 80 bucks.

Anybody else found some cool stuff?

Haven't tried this one yet but ordered one. It's a biofeedback device that helps you control your breathing to dramatically lower stress. Cost 300 bucks (got mine on ebay for 250). The reviews are rave.

solar powered flashlight. It's cheap, but the quality control isn't too good since its made in China.

You can also look up one of those battery chargers solar powered that charges up AAA, AA, C, D sizes. IT does take forever to charge them though.

Hand cranked radios, flashlights are sulf sufficient devices as long as the winding mechnism still works.

Wind up LED flashlight (or you can plug in), 24 hours on a full charge

I paid over $60 for it. Now it's down to $35.

This Mp3 player will run 80 hours on one double-A battery

Kinetic powered torch:

Kinetic torch on eBay.co.uk

This is just an example - you can get them in gadget shops, etc etc.

I have found that you only need to shake it for say 5-10 seconds to get enough light to do a small job - like find something that's fallen behind the refrigerator, etc. The LED light from mine is very cold and blue - if I was going to read a book in a tent, I have another torch with a conventional bulb (and rechargeable batteries) which would be easier on the eyes.
