No guns to kill with? Ammo is good for MAYBE 1 second during a disaster. What a stoogie.
Back to the top ten list. Get some K-1 kerosene for those oil lamps. It's $5 gal at the pump now. Time to full up a 5 gal can. The best oil lamps are Aladdin. They put out the best light for the amount of fuel they burn. No pumping required either. But, expensive to purchase and you need to know how to operate them, a tricky thing.
Also, if you can find a couple of old center draft oil lamps such as Rayo or B&H (they use a round wick), they put out good light and really kick out the heat too. great to use as lighting and space heating. Down side, they suck fuel. Upside, they are easy to operate.
Here's a pic of a Rayo with a fancy font (base).
I have a couple of them from about 1895. They still work as new!

Garlic may actually be thinking to make "toe poppers" with all his ammo and no guns.
If that is the case then he is way smarter then I give him credit for. _________________ "There must be a bogeyman; there always is, and it cannot be something as esoteric as "resource depletion." You can't go to war with that." Emersonbiggins

Toilet paper as currency, that's ironic... I remember reading about people's lives during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Toilet paper was like gold, a lot of people had to use newspaper.
I would say:
1. Warm clothing
2. Fresh water
3. Canned food/army rations
4. Toilet paper
5. Guns/ammo
6. Coal stove with a couple tons of coal
7. Bicycle
8. Backpack
9. Sub zero sleeping bags
10. A woman (to offset loneliness, depression) _________________ "That's the problem with mercy, kid... It just ain't professional" - Fast Eddie, The Color of Money |

| Other paper including newspaper can be easier on your butt if you scrunch it up while you're sitting there wishing you had real toilet paper. After a bunch of working and scrunching it can be soft almost like real toilet paper. |

I've been experimenting with making vegetable oil lamps. It's very easy. I like it because I can grow my own sunflower and peanut oil pretty easily, and hopefully olive oil some years. Of course my home-made ones don't look as nice and fancy as the ones you pictured, but that's not important to me. I mean, aesthetics are important, but I like my simple lamps.
I haven't been stockpiling TP because I figure we can use the rag system if necessary, as discussed in other threads in the Planning forum. However, if it's true that people will barter other more valuable things for it, maybe it's not such a bad idea. Then again, space is at a premium at my place, so maybe not. _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young |

One of the most entertaining conversations I've had in Alaska was a bunch of outdoorsy women talking about the most awkward situation they'd ever been in when having to pee in the woods, or on the tundra, or on the glacier, and how they'd overcome it. Things like sitting down on a log and pretending you were taking in the view.
Ever heard of a pee funnel? Those come in mighty handy when you're stuck out in the big wide open.
Great list, Rocc, thanks. This one's a print. _________________ "When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." --Sinclair Lewis |

Try a small motor boat with 5 guys on the way from Belize to the Yucatan. No way to hide, you just hang your butt over the edge and drape a towel over yourself. Quite an ice-breaker, that... _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young |

More believable than 19 terrorists and box cutters fooling NORAD. _________________ "There must be a bogeyman; there always is, and it cannot be something as esoteric as "resource depletion." You can't go to war with that." Emersonbiggins

Yeah, me too, I'm not setting a very good example. I tend to be more lax about that in Open Discussion, but this is a good topic so I'm sorry for getting off it. I just felt nostalgic for those crazy days so I had to share. Thanks, roccman. _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young |

Amazing. Nobody has mentioned one of the most crucial items of all. We take it for granted but can't live without it. Salt. If this "disaster" lasts for a long time, if it becomes permanent, salt will be worth more than gold. You can get a lifetime's supply for 20 bucks. It's a good preservative as well so you might want more. Shoot a dog or a bird, shoot more than you need, then salt the rest and dry it in the sun. A good supply of ground black pepper might be a good idea too. _________________ Turn those Machines back On! - Don Ameche in Trading Places |
