For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

Seahorse I think your idea of buying ammo as a barter item and investment is a great idea. I am on another board where they were saying 22 ammo just went from 50 bucks to 70 bucks at Wallly world for bulk 22.

I am not sure either, SH2... I have never owned a gun, nor have I shot one (When I was in AF basic, the first female company After ours was the first to be allowed to go on the gun range-a day late and a dollar short, as the saying goes).
I still can't convince my husband that we need at least one gun.("You couldn't shoot one, your not strong enough," he says, patting me on the head!)
I have found a gunrange in Burnsville (next town over) where one can practice, but I suppose that I will end up just saving some money, buy one without telling him and then presenting it when the need arises...

Wow, sorry to hear that. I can barely feel the recoil on my P22 pistol, and it wasn't too expensive new. My mom is pretty weak and crippled, and I chose that gun partly for her because she probably couldn't handle anything much more powerful (also for livestock slaughter).
I agree with those who think ammo is a good investment! _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young

Just the oppposite, my boyfriend got frustrated with me for NOT being able to shoot a rifle!! I figured it out and did okay, eventually. Plus, he bought me a little .22 I can carry without it showing!
Ferretlover, I would be sure to shoot a few different guns before you buy anything. I'm certainly not an expert but I bought a 380 without firing it and I'm not really crazy about it. Ang, love your squirrel! I hope he's more successful at holding onto his nuts than the one in IceAge.
We bought a glock last year. When I went to add some ammo to the stash about 3 months ago, the shelf was almost bare at Sportsman's Warehouse. _________________ "For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it." --Patrick Henry

My wife has that problem. I loath guns, wont let them in the house and shes an avid shooter.....
Ok ok, seriously? Theres times for compromise and times for putting your foot down.
Tell, and I do mean TELL, your husband you want a firearm and tell him, again I do mean TELL him, your going to buy one.
If he throws a fit tell him then to make it fair he needs to get rid of "insert his hobby item", be it cable TV, DVD's or whatever.
If you cant have something you want its only fair he give up something in return. _________________ "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the

why toilet paper?
In Asia most people use water to clean there behind and it just has to be a small bucket worth of water to do it. if you have been to Asia you will see what i mean. there's no toilet paper in a Thai bathroom. Most people here use toilet paper like tissues i.e. for cleaning up spills etc.

I was always intrigued by that list.
Of the first 10, only 9 and 10 seem very important – food. The main thing missing is available water. Water filter is there but…
Clubs, spears etc are easy; I don’t have any pepper spray at hand, but a dose of urine and cayenne pepper in someone’s face might give you an opportunity to whack ‘em with the pipe up your sleeve; most people have a knife or two in the kitchen or pocket, firewood can be had most anywhere – even your living room; a fork is a whisk, a stout knife a can opener – if you have a can to open that is.
Anyway, I’d guess my 10 items to store would be
Water – stored in whatever container possible, at least 2 weeks worth; and find an auxiliary source, make this number one, two and even three on your list depending on your climate and infrastructure dependence.
Bleach (flakes or liquid)
Clothes and blankets (tubs and tubs worth from yard sales if it gets cold where you live)
Staple food that you know how to prepare and your family is accustomed to eating.
Ignition source (Bics to matches to flint – ignore if Eagle Scout)
Escape route / meet up location, planned and practiced
Cash – in small bills
Meds, personal requirements of course plus Anti-inflammatory pills / triple antibiotic / Kotex / kaopect (or Gatorade powder and pectin, same thing)
Tool kit (or at least a good multitool for every person)
Wind-up radio (preferably with a couple of SW bands and antenna extension)
Firearms are nice tools, realistically though I feel I wouldn’t last long in much of a firefight so I go for hideouts and or big nasty looking bores and enough supplies to get me through one or two encounters. If you like them you probably practice, are more or less proficient and probably have a few and some supplies. If you aren’t a gunner now, probably better to put your available bucks into water/food/shelter for the little kids today and become proficient with firearms as your next step.
If you have any type of canned food you are certainly going to get enough salt.
Really though, as SCF mentioned: common sense. The best prep could be to learn how the things you rely on work and how to work around them if they don't. Not romantic, quick or easy but a little knowledge could save your life.
Oh, BTW, corn is way over $5 for March, Soy is over $13 and I can’t remember what wheat is at but it is way high. All meat/dairy and just about everything in the cold cases at your supermarket is going to follow.
Don’t say I didn’t mention it.

IMO, the first couple things to disappear (within the general public):
common sense
respect
courtesy
responsibliity.
Had to laff at the list, alcohol was among the very last. I put that right up there with the other barter goods (food, water, tools, personal hygiene items, etc.). _________________ "...the problem is today we have unknown unknowns."

Actually, I’m thinking those are the things lacking in the day to day world but reappear in any disaster, at least until the bitter end.
Experiencing a couple of earthquakes, a little flood, a few fires, ice storms and a big snow or two have pretty well convinced me that such goofy things as unselfishness and self-sacrifice are alive and well in peoples hearts.
Not the standard view around here I know….. _________________ Make a plan and work it:

Not sure if it was mentioned earlier but quality tools nessesary for our "new" occupations. In my case a piss-poor ranch hand. I have several pairs of fencing pliers, fence stretcher, work gloves, chainsaw w/ fuel, and steel toed wellingtons in my bug out kit. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket
The 'hongerwinter' was the most recent famine in a western modern country. I have read many accounts of it and the goods that were missed most besides food were:
I have been in some crisis situations and the things i learned were:
- Footware is really important. Without it you are immobile very fast. It also can wear out much quicker than you think because in a crisis you walk a lot more than now.
- Entertainment. You cannot believe how boring a crisis really is. Books are good. so are musical instruments.
- Have you ever tried to cut your hair with a regular scissors?- for a decent haircut you really need a scissor that was made for cutting hair. By the way: being able to give people a decent haircut is a valuable skill in a crisis. You can do it for money/ a meal.
- being in a prolonged crisis is very different than being in a short time survival situation. The health and mental dangers are incomparable: were in a survival situation it often pays off to take risk, in a longer crisis you learn to do the exact opposite.
But during that ice storm we had, a wind up radio, candles, matches, and blankets were the best things I had bought. _________________ What, so I'm in no end game
