Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Right on the mark. What do we do with the big slice of no-productive, "consumers"? The couple in my post have no significant skills, and obviously no foresight--losing their house. When Mom's Social Security goes down, she can't afford to feed THEM, let alone the dog.
I'm retirement age, but I'll be working till I die. Knew that long ago.

I nearly bought there 2 years ago, for the same reasons you mentioned. Just try getting a decent realtor to do any kind of legwork for you, though. Tough investing from a distance. They have a horrendously high vacancy rate and so any property purchased you have to be willing to live in or have sit empty until the place starts to really take off.

Starbucks is my favorite company that I like to site on this forum. It's the one that anti-globalization activists love to hate most. If you're looking for a "canary in the mineshaft" example then Starbucks does a good job of fitting the bill. Contrary to popular belief on this forum I do NOT think airlines and trucking are good examples of a "canary in the mineshaft". When things go bad it is the unnecessary things in life that we let go first. Transportation is a necessity, boutique coffee is not. Of course our transportation will have to be changed to adapt to a post PO world but that won't happen till at least a decade later.
My use of Starbucks as an example of a corporation that could follow the oligarchic take over model and eliminate all competition was wrong.(on another thread) They cater too much to the middle class. When the middle class disappear, they dissappear or merge with Dunkin Donuts.

How could it be a dumb move? U.S. workers will work for less than their German counterparts. They get to buy land and labor with Dollars and sell their cars for Euros. Sounds brilliant to me.
