What are you talking about? All this money will go straight to Russia and Saudi Arabia via the gas tank. Why not use the 145 billion to build a train system? Or as a coupon to buy solar panels? That would do far more for economic stimulus than sending it straight overseas for oil or China for more plastic crap. _________________ One of these now am I too, a fugitive from the gods and a wanderer, at the mercy of raging Strife.

This is such a f****** farce! In my house, we'll probably just save it and decide later what it would be best spent on, if anything. I think most people will just go out and spend it on some crap made in abroad using dirty energy generation and shipped here by virtue of the last remaining cheap oil.
I totally agree with NeoPeasant's comment. I find it disgusting that we citizens of the US are reduced to mere "consumers", like so many fat pigs at a trough filled with shiny new baubles we are constantly bombared by marketers to believe we need.
In regard to the comment about this money being better spent my me rather than being sent to energy producing countries, I have a question: is this so-called stimulus money just going to be tacked-on to our $9,000,000,000,000 debt? If that's the case, then it isn't real money at all. It's just electrons in a computer somewhere being sent our way. Stupid. Destructive. Pointless.

Cynus-
Exactly my thought. Why not fix some crap thats broken or thats really needed. If we could stop blowing so much cash on military and use it to build more train tracks, nuclear power plants, and sexbots i wouldn't be so doomerish.
In some ways i'm wondering if this is the governments ways of cleaning out inventory that wasn't sold during Christmas?

Bush's proposal to "stimulate" the economy. $800 rebate for individuals, $1600 for married couples.

Of course it is a wealth transfer to stockholders, wealth transferred from our kids - just as the tax plan.
This administration and the party in general is really good at getting the gun-toters and right to life folks to fall in line and foot the bill for their real constituency, just like the other party does for their real constituency.
Since I can’t see myself changing the system next month, my idea is to use whatever means necessary to position myself as best I can for whatever comes next and hopefully it will benefit my kids - since they are paying. _________________ Make a plan and work it: |

Agreed. The best thing we could do for our kids would be to take as much fiscal pain as we can stand right now. Pay down the debt -public and private, make do with less, save some money for a rainy day and invest some of those savings in renewable energy.
The likelihood of that happening is about the same as my getting a date with Salma Hayek. _________________ TANSTAAFL |

I've been thinking of buying a Ruger Mark II handgun for almost a year. It's a little semi-auto in .22 LR that would make an excellent pack gun, but I could never really justify purchasing another firearm.
But with this gift from tomorrow's taxpayers, I can get the pistol and maybe $1200 worth of dried beans.
Seriously, though, I think I'm just going to screw with their plan and stick it in savings instead of spending it to "jump start" the economy.
Then again, that Mark II would make a sweet little firearm when I'm hiking through the woods ... _________________ “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.” (Ted Perry) |

I've pretty much decided that if I get a check it's going to The Nature Conservancy. We're far better off preserving as much land as possible that hasn't been paved over yet than buying more crap from China or Saudi Arabia. _________________ One of these now am I too, a fugitive from the gods and a wanderer, at the mercy of raging Strife.

I think I will have a big ass party for all the neighbors and kids to celebrate the financial unwinding. Beer, brisket, and potato salad for everyone! We should be getting the checks just in time for the Fourth of July. One last humdinger of a party! Then back to the reality of the PO blues...

Well, at least I'll be able to pay off the credit card with it, so I can finally make the credit card go away and get the card company off my back. Might even be able to get caught up on my student loan payments. Very short term solution, which is great, but for someone who just turned 24 yesterday, such as myself, and is still rather young and with lots of debt, the long term outlook is rather depressing, regardless of whatever proverbial bone the government hands out to alleviate the short term pains.
Excited and sick, all at the same time. |

It will go to savings. Finally getting closer to buying land close to relatives and I'll need all the extra useless paper money I can get! _________________ Everybody thinks they're righteous! Adam Baldwin "Jayne" Firefly/Serenity |

Good idea, but how about cashing it for $20 bills to put in the cookie jar and to spend only at the farmers market?
