I am thinking of having a peak oil preparation course. Would anyone be interested?
We could do it here in Maine.
Topics could include:
Small woodlot management
Gardening
Bread baking
Cast iron cookery
Solar (H2O and PV)
Maple syruping
Farmer's markets
Insulating
Living on little
Trading
Community building
We could do this some time next summer. It could be a weekend for those who want to come and share their knowledge.
Or we could do this anywhere in the Northeast. I'd go.

Hmmm ... only the last three of those topics figure into my own peak oil preparation plans. But it sounds like a good idea for those interested in the other topics. Good luck with it, Revi. _________________ “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.” (Ted Perry) |

I guess I call it a preparation course, but it could also be a weekend to get together with other peak oil folks and talk about our plans. It might be a good way to compare notes.
I thought of some of the other things, but I don't want to get too far into defense against the Zombie hordes.
I think it would be a good way to get into peak oil preparation. _________________ Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings. |

I've thought about doing the same things where I live, especially for city and suburban people who know nothing but are afraid to ask. Make it a week course in the country.
If we were closer I would discuss it with you. Maybe you should franchise the idea, but then you'd need a catchy name. Call it DoomerYoga _________________

Wouldn't this have been a little more pertinent back when peak oil actually happened? Now that we know the overall consequences appear to be shoddy lending practices and stupid consumers signing up for mortgages they can't afford, maybe a class in financial management to survive peak oil would make more sense than the hiding in the woods and insulating our homes type stuff?
Just an idea. |

Feel free to use the idea if you want, Pstarr. I think it would be a great way to spread the message.
KTH, I think a financial preparation piece would be a great addition to the course. I was thinking of that myself.
How about around the beginning of July? Maybe the weekend of the 5th. What better time than Independence day? _________________ Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings. |

If I lived up that way I would come, mostly for the opportunity to network with others who are actively prepping. I think it's a good idea. _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young |

I would add livestock, welding, milling, and orchards as these are the things I'm learning right now and I'd like to know more and teach others what I know. _________________

| I think a few lessons in wood-working would be great. All hand tools. No electric devices. I used to help my father out with small projects around the house when I was a kid, but I haven't hammered a nail in at least 10 years! Can you believe it? It's such a basic skill. |

How about marksmanship? (you gotta shoot the zombies in the head)
Machete fencing?
I recommend you call the course Doomerpalooza.
A little off topic, but I would love to spend some time in Maine, even if it wasn't for a PO prep course. I live in Texas, but when I got married, we went to Maine on our honeymoon in February and it was awesome. We rented a four wheel drive in Boston and just drove up and down the coast. LL Bean alone would have been worth the trip. No tourists, plenty of rooms everywhere. It was cold, but lots of fun. _________________

Why would anyone want to share secrets revealing how to survive this disaster? I would share this information only with close family and friends. If everyone knows how to shoot and find all the blueberry patches, no one will last a bloody week.
A very bloody week. _________________ Everything is Impermanent. Shakyamuni Buddha |

I once proposed a "PO.com Convention" (you know, with workshops, speeches, the usual stuff). It died on the vine.
In general, the obstacles of moving from typing stuff onto a screen to the nitty-gritty reality of face contact prove hard to surmount. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

I've got this vision of a baseball field with nothing on it but coaches and umpires arguing with one another. Some of the coaches are kicking dirt on the umpires' shoes. _________________
