I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

How about making biodiesel from the waste streams that flow from the casinos? The toilets alone should be good for a few hundred thousand barrels. (Someone had to say this. Might as well be me.)
Nope. The waste could, however, be used to make vast amounts of biogas, from which electricity could be generated easily. But that would make way too much sense. _________________ Kestrel

Well, what else would we expect, I guess. The whole insane place is based upon delusions of grandeur, so why would they think there's any limits to their vision and dreams? Nothing's held them back in the past, so nothing will restrict them in the future, right?
Forget the airport. What are they going to do for water?: Small airport big problem for Vegas

Las Vegas's chance for a new boom may be limited by its airport, which is busting at the seams even before the addition over the next four years of around 40,000 new hotel rooms on the Las Vegas Strip, Deutsche Bank analyst Bill Lerner said on Tuesday.
To justify those rooms, nearly all of which are aimed at upscale customers, revenue at resorts along the gambling corridor will need to rise by 75 percent between now and 2012, he said at the Reuters Travel and Leisure Summit in Los Angeles.
That will be "difficult to impossible to achieve" given constraints on transport infrastructure, including McCarran Airport and the area's roads and highways, Lerner said.
The analyst said McCarran will likely be able to handle normal visitation growth for a couple of years, but plans for a new airport are still in the works and it would not come on line before 2017 at the earliest.
Meanwhile, several new resorts, including Wynn Resort's Encore, MGM Mirage's CityCenter and Boyd Gaming's Echelon Place, are already under construction and more have been announced.
40,000 new rooms. Good Lord. As crazy as it seems, though, they may be able to fill them barring a complete economic collapse. It really does seem to be a case of "if you build it, they will come" in that town. No matter what gets put up, people flock to it from all over the world.
Maybe they're right. Maybe they can go on and on, expanding forever. We'll see.

A lot of money is being channeled into these projects. CityCenter Las Vegas alone is, IIRC, supposed to be in the neighborhood of a $8 Billion project. Others are routinely $2-3 billion. _________________ "It's called the American Dream because you'd have to be asleep to believe it."

Dangerous practices found at four other treatment centers, officials say
Associated Press: LAS VEGAS - A statewide inspection of outpatient surgery centers like the one believed to have spread hepatitis C to its patients has uncovered dangerous practices at four other clinics, a health official said Friday.
The state swore to quickly inspect all 50 Nevada outpatient surgery centers after it was discovered the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada spread the blood-borne virus to at least six patients by reusing syringes and sharing vials of medication. …
