I watched evening tv news if there was news about the fuel protests in Southern Europe, but there wasn't. Instead there was news about heavy rain and floods in many European countries.
ROME (AFP) — Italy declared a state of emergency in the north of the country Friday after flooding and mudslides left at least three people dead in heavy rains that also hit Belgium, Britain, France and Germany.

Well, we started off by planting some radishes and peas in April. (Late - very late for around here.) We stopped at that point, because it has stayed so cold around here. (Western Idaho - 1000 ft elevation.)
We had 4 days of warm weather, in May. But for the most part our weather is about 2 months behind schedule.
Usually by June 1, I am grumbling about the fact that we bought an old farm house without air conditioning. Instead this year I am still wearing sweaters to work.
We have pretty much decided to forgo our big garden this year. We are going to put in a jalepeno plant, two tomato plants, one squash, and one other plant. We may put in some onions, too.
Other than that, because of the late start temperature-wise and the incredible amount of rain (STILL raining here, after a couple of years of drought-like conditions, and lots of fires -- highs this week in the 60's), we are figuring we can make it one year without the garden, and are focusing energies on some major projects we need to get finished before fall.
One of those projects is completion of the greenhouse -- so we WILL have veggies this winter.

PS - BIG problem is that the rain has really got the grass (and weeds) growing like crazy. It's impossible to mow in the orchard, which is not good for the trees. Eugene, Oregon-Cloudy and wet (w/occasional sun).....was 90+ for a spell about 3 weeks back..... Snowed in April!?!? Been around 60-65 the past few weeks. This is one of those years where Summer starts July 5th and continues through to Halloween....I like it like that!
People are starting to complain a bit about the clouds etc....but they know that wonderful NW summer weather will get here in July!

On NPR this afternoon the report was that due to the current weather pattern (read "ridge of death") that the National Weather Service is predicting no more than 2" of rain through the end of July. They said the lack of rain started earlier this year than last year and the drought will be worse this year. (low soil moisture, increased soil exposure due to consecutive drought years, high temps etc. . . .)

Texas is certainly looking terrible. I had a feeling this was going to happen---to "pay" for last year's abundant moisture there.
I myself am currently right on the edge of the long-running Southeastern drought. It's been on the dry side here (halfway between Richmond and Charlottesville), but we keep getting rescued by thunderstorms. Today we had a monster that dropped 2.30 inches in my rain gauge! I can put away my watering can for a week or more.
My tree-farm property 75 miles south of here got nothing.
The big question as always this time of year is hurricanes. The forecasters have been wrong two years in a row now. Activity in the Atlantic remains nil at this writing. (I know, it's early, but I remember having the same feeling---that the hurricane season would flop---this time last year.) _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Although not as bad as last year at this time, the drought here in Atlanta is ongoing, right on the border of "moderate" and "severe". We did get a shower last night, but barely enough to get the ground completely wet. Sure wish we'd get a 2.3-inch bombshell like you got.
We need 9 inches of rain to make up the long-running deficit, some areas 2 1/2 hours NE of here need 15 inches of rain to catch up. Our only way out of this is by way of tropical systems, let's see about coming up with some good hurricane dances we can start performing.
But looking at that national drought map, it really looks like the southern 1/3 of the whole country is in varying stages of drought, clear across the continent. Kinda makes me wish I had moved to upstate New York after all... _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

Threadbear: Yes, these goings-on are supposed to be attributable to La Nina. I don't know if the La Nina of last year is still in place, though---anyone know? If so, it's an extraordinarily persistent one.
Byron: We got ANOTHER thunderstorm this evening, a milder one than yesterday's. It dropped another half-inch. Sorry to provoke your rain-envy.
