Hey Mystiek. Now I see why you want to be armed to the teeth. We don't have wild anything like that here in Ontario. Impressive. Go get 'em. BTW, I didn't mean any chauvinistic crap with what I said. |

| SCF-I thought it was funny!!! Actually my nickname growing up was Ellie Mae (after Ellie Mae Clampett on the Beverly Hillbillies.). The hogs were shot with a 30-06 with a scope. I figure my husband and I will setting on getting both guns, but we'll have to wait until next month ($$$$). Today was a bust as far as PO prep, but we did buy 24 more quart mason jars. I'm going to be getting 3 bushels of tomatoes next week. |

| Ok-now a serious post. I have set up a file at work (I have more space in my office) for copies of good "how to articles" etc for PO prep. If/when the electricity is interupted-especially if we have an EMP attack and I can't get on my computer to look up stuff- I will have a hard copy to reference back to in a crisis situation. |

mystiek,
Yup. I believe in HARD COPIES. Done a lot of that myself, printing out service manuals, how-to's, recipes, etc.
Got a 4 ft. sickle mower yesterday at auction, to mount on the garden tractor. I'm betting that I can keep it running for a long time, and I DON'T want to cut hay or wheat with a scythe. Been there, done that, not interested.
Racking my brain today about preps, what to do next, as the impending financial debacle looms closer. _________________ Local fix-it guy.. |

HAHA, EMP attack? I think the power going off would be a slightly more likely scenario. |

| On Friday I had lunch with a lovely, intelligent gal who was peak oil aware. Things seemed to go pretty well, wound up talking for like an hour. She definitely wanted to keep in touch, so things seem to be moving in a good direction. |

| Well, if the power just went out I wouldn't be as excited because I have various backup systems, but if an EMP attack occurred most electronics would be fried. I just like to be thorough in my preparations.... |

From a preparation point of view (for most of us , it does not matter why it goes out. |

For anyone interested, Canadian Tire (Canada Eh!) is selling 1000W generators for $99.99. While this is about 4000W short of anything suitable, it would make a good unit for smaller appliances, recharging, and a solor panel addon.
PS: I won't work for Crappy Tire etc. I simply bought one today and want to let others know of the deal.
I am also 50% done packing 30 year rice in Mylar bags in buckets. Packing enough for 1 year. |

My husband and I purchased a few 7 gallon stackable water jugs at Wallyworld, as well as some miscellaneous items for our vehicle survival kits. We also picked up some military surplus medic bags, and began assembling several first aid kits - one each for our vehicles, a household kit, and a backpacking/hiking size kit. We already had a few first aid kits, but realized that some of the items are old and need to be tossed.
I've been getting books through interlibrary loan like crazy. The latest titles are: World Made by Hand (James Kunstler), Peak Oil Survival: Preparation for Life After Gridcrash (Aric McBay), Water Storage (Art Ludwig), and How to Raise Chickens (Christine Heinrichs).
Hubby found a recipe for Mormon lentil soup on the web which seems like it would lend itself really well to dry longterm storage. We had an experimental batch and it was really good! Ingredients were cheap, and I think it came out to something like 10 cents per serving. |
