We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.
Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.
We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

Also, a bit more information about myself...
My parents have me covered easily for living expenses and food, housing and whatnot. Im just asking what I should do with my free spending money and or time.
I already spend a good portion of my time reading and improving my knowledge of various things. I am going to try and learn basic survival skills(growing food, etc.) soon, maybe next time I go to the library I will pick up some books.
I have no clue about any of this financial stuff. I looked up some of the companies/banks/funds you guys suggested and I am terribly confused... though I am trying to learn. How do you buy stocks exactly? I know that must be a stupid question.

Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, you had somebody called a stock broker who did it for you.
These days, you set up an account with ETrade. _________________ "I was born in a deep forest

I don't have a business degree, but I did figure out how to become financially independent at the age of 50, on a very modest income as a science copy editor.
You shouldn't focus on investing all the cash you now have. The amount is too small and you have other priorities at your age.
INSTEAD, start aiming to buy a little silver each and every month, and finding for it the best hiding place you can possibly dream up.
The key to amassing significant assets is to save regularly and in a quantity you can afford to live without (so that you "don't miss it"). Don't overdo it or your program will fail, because you'll be forced to go into your savings.
For example, you could aim to buy five ounces of silver every month. After a year, you'll have 60. Etc.
Make this a religion.
As you earn more and learn more you might go down different avenues, but always hew to the same basic principle.
I suggest silver rounds, as they are called. These are 1-ounce coins made by major silver producers like Engelhard and Sunshine. Their premium (markup over the spot silver price) is relatively small and they will be very easy to sell when and if the time comes (for you, a long way off). Also, they're pretty and are difficult (or uneconomical) to fake.
I don't like junk silver because it comes in all sizes and weights and could be confusing or awkward to sell. That's not to say junk silver isn't a good route to go.
I recommend Goldmastersusa.com. They charge less than Kitco and many other online dealers, and they are absolutely reliable.
Avoid stocks. They are a potential graveyard for someone in your demographic slot. With all due respect, you're too young and naive for them (lucky you!), and they're all probably doomed anyway. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

I don't want to burst your bubble but you DO NOT have enough money to invest.
I disagree, $1,000 plus a couple hundred each month is plenty to invest. Check out this article on MSN Money to help.
S&P 500 right now is a good bet since it has been beaten up in the last several months.
I personally think the markets will gain ground before peak oil doom and gloom takes over. I could be wrong but I don't picture any ill affects from peak oil for at least 5 years.
But if you believe we will be sent back into the stone age soon then stay out of the markets.

Here is a good book to help you out. You can pick it up at most book stores or online.
I am 25 years old and it has helped me out a lot. It helped me out to buy my first house, invest in a Roth IRA, 401(k), pension plan, general investing in bonds, muni bonds, tax-exempt investments, stocks, and mutual funds.
It is a great book trust me.

Several years ago, at age 50, I took out all the money I had saved in an SEP-IRA, paid the tax and penalty, and bought physical silver.....buckets of 90% US coin.....3500 FRNs/bucket at the time.....like to killed me to pay 3500 "dollars" for 1,000 ACTUAL dollars.
I kept track of the Fidelity mutual funds I'd had my IRA money in....they would have grown my money about 36% in that time.....my silver "grew" about 400% in that time....those buckets are now right at 14,000...each.....
My IRA I had no control of should things go to pot.
My silver is under my control and watch.
You young guys keep putting your faith in tax sheltered vehicles, and when the baby boomers hit full stride of retirement, I suspect you're going to be in for a surprise in the form of your "plan" being 'nationalized' ( assuming the 'dollar' value of it will still buy anything ) because our weenie politicians are NOT gonna be able to keep their hands off that huge pot of cash.....and they know RIGHT where it is, thanks to that custodian arrangement.

You are very fortunate to time the market correctly. But not everyone is that "skilled" because many people have gotten burned buying silver and gold in the past.
If you would have bought silver in 1979 at an average of $21.793 ( inflation adjusted $61.48 ) an ounce then you would be kicking yourself for 30 years. Check out this chart that goes back to 1792. Silver has been all over the place in terms of price. Mostly down from historic highs.

What TN and Smallpox said.
And find a rifle range to spend your spare time.Find some ex Marines in there and ask them if they,ll teach you how to shoot.
If they say no,be persisent. You want to be taught how to shoot by Marines.
Find a gym and get very healthy.
Whatever extra money you have,go with silver.
That'll keep you busy for a year. You'll be 19,healthy ,a good shot, some emergency metals stashed.
Then you can start thinking about learning how to weld. _________________ ΜΟΛΩΝ-ΛΑΒΕ

That book will soon be dated beyond measure. A strange curiosity from a vanished era.
I recommend instead "Your Money Or Your Life." (Except don't buy T-bills as he recommends at the end! Can't blame him; the book was written pre-pre-doom.)
The concept defining money as "life energy" really got my attention all those years ago when I first picked up my copy. Also the notion of living below your means and pocketing the difference until you can live on it without having to work for and humiliate yourself before others.
You don't have to do the "wall chart"---a bit goofy, although the principle it demonstrates is golden.
Look, kid, here's the crux: Fake money is going out. Real money is coming in. Real money is gold, silver, land, water, and a roof you own free and clear and can afford to keep from leaking. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."
