Is it possible to hedge fuel several years in advance?
Last time the oil price was below 60$ a barrel was in February 2007!?
@AirlinePilot
Did i understand you correct: There is a bigger problem (not announced) with the MD planes of AA?
What about all the planes parking in the Mojave desert? What about the airplanes waiting on the areas of leasing companies?
Aren't there any agreements between the airlines to lent some of their planes to other airlines in case of difficulties like that in the moment?
For me it is also very strange that the repairs, which are not a case of live or death i think, have to happen at all planes at the same time and not, say, in three weeks or so.
Heathrow has still problems with the handling of the luggage. Last i heard was that all the luggage (several thousand pieces till now) should be transported to Italy to sort it.
Last Christmas Heathrow had the third time in a row, that several hundred flights had to be cancelled.
1. 11.12.2005 The explosion at the big oil depot of Buncefield in England. Planes had to make extra stops in other airports in England to get enough fuel.
2. Shortly before Christmas 2006: Many flights had to be cancelled because of the strong fog.
3. A few days before Christmas 2007: Again tight fog and Cancellation of a lot of flights AND one Carrier got into bankruptcy and 200-300 flights were cancelled.
Since Summer 2004 i am aware of peak oil and therefore if any news has to do directly or indirectly with energy i'm very sensible.
Christmas is short period of time when a huge amount of flights are done simultaneously. So the demand for aviation fuel at this time is the highest in the year i think.
If peak oil is not a rumor then any disturbances which cause a lower demand for aviation fuel should be explained by that.
I know that there is a big question mark in the series of the three years and this question mark is only to be solved when you do a very disturbing assumption.
Now there is the problem with the luggage in Heathrow.
If my suspicions are correct we should see one or more events in one country or several countries in the near future which lead to a reduced demand of vacation flights in the summer.
One event, which is already emerging and can grow a lot to impair the summer destinations are the food riots in a lot of countries worldwide, even in Indonesia, Egypt or the Philippines.
