We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.

Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.

We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

Instead of making a new thread whenever something energy-related happens in Finland, I thought to create a bigger thread where to collect news of things happening here.

I'll start with the big news of last friday:

New nuclear reactors planned.

Even though the 5th reactor hasn't been completed yet, nuclear energy company TVO left application for building a new 1000-1800 MW reactor to Olkiluoto. Goverment expects to get two other applications this year, one from national Fortum to add a new reactor to Loviisa and one from Fennovoima, owned by German Eonin and Finnish energy-intensive industry to build a reactor in Simo municipality near the city of Kemi. Its believed that at least one reactor will get the permit when applications are processed early next year.

There's an article on HS newspaper's website that rising diesel costs hinder public transport in capital area and the article spells hard times for bus travellers.

I can't link it because the link has letter a with two dots but I can run it through Google translation tool which can now translate texts from Finnish to English.

HS wrote:
Quote:
Bussimatkustajille is known ankeat times for the Helsinki metropolitan area, are predicting a line-autoyrittajat. The reason for this is that expensive fuel is a bus exacerbated the already tight finances.

Destitution may lead to the fact that the level of transport services will have to be cut back.

Diesel price has been kallistunut for more than a year during the 35 per cent. Ari Heinila Directorate-motoring image of a disastrous increase in the price:

"Markkinaosuustaistelu the Helsinki metropolitan area is so fierce that it is putting to consider whether the whole exercise makes no sense."

Operating in the Helsinki metropolitan area bussiyritykset have produced a 2000-first century annually to a total of 5-10 million euro loss. The market rumour already, that at least one of the great bussiyrityksista should be available for sale.

The loss is based on the mid-1990s, started to kilpailutus. As a result, prices dropped to the level of 30-35 per cent. Price levels are estimated to be now no fewer than 10-15 per cent below the break-even point.

Major international bussiyritykset Concordia, and Veolia also accuse the city of Helsinki-owned competitors in Helsinki Bussiliikennetta alihinnoittelusta.

Helsinki Bussiliikenteen Chairman of the Board of Ilkka J. Kari (ECR) denies the accusations.

Hope you understood something. Here's a link to the translation tool: http://www.google.com/translate_t

Was in todays main news in national tv:
Food costs have risen more in Finland (10%)than in rest of EU (6%), especially dairy products and meat. Main reason presented was risen energycosts of production and transportation, but there was also speculation of higher profit margins of industry and traders.
