Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

saying electricity can be used to mine for phosphates is a totally different statement then what you originally said: electricity can supply all fertilizer needs
or perhaps did you forget that? you can thank me for "refreshing" your memory.
First off, I never meant to say that electricity could provide for all fertilizer production, since my initial statement was about Ammonia production, although in retrospect it probably could be.
Your original post (before edited) made no mention of ammonia. You specifically said electricity can provide for all fertilizer demand. Do you remember that? or do you have selective memory? or perhaps just very short term memory? Rolling Eyes

So... My original post, that I didn't edit (It would state that I edited it if I edited it), made no mention of Ammonia?

While we may see a cap WRT using wind to provide electricity for the grid, other applications, such as manufacturing Ammonia for fertilizer, are definitely viable, and may even be economic depending on how we account for the externalities of Carbon emissions.

Phosphate latest craze for investors

He didn't cite examples, but we can. Morocco and Western Sahara have enough known phosphate to meet the world's demand at present levels for 300 years. And big money is going into new production, including a new mine in Morocco (the so-called Saudi Arabia of phosphate). An Indian company is to spend $US1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) to build a fertiliser plant in Mozambique, a country with large known resources of phosphate. And another Indian company has teamed up with Singapore money to develop new mines.

Key phrase AT PRESENT DEMAND. After watching the Bartlett video I now know how useless those rosey projections are. With a 6% or greater growth rate, those resources will be gone in no time.

All these stories tell us is that we have a lucky lifeboat, but ONLY if we institute a zero-growth society.

At 6% we would reach over a hundred billion within a half century. Lucky for us, population growth is at a tad over a percent and projected to drop, w/ population leveling off around ~9-10 billion. Wink
