Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

I found out recently about peak oil and civilization collapse
Now, how exactly I prepare for it ?
Does anyone has a checklist for everything that can be done?

as far as I know , I have to
- buy precious metals
- buy food and commonly used items
- convert home to solar energy

what else ??? I have been looking on the web everybody is talking about how bad can it go, but few give precise solutions. The 'Survival guide' costs $26 dollars on some websites. Does anybody has links to some free survival guide?

There are a lot of details. The food has expiration dates. How long can you keep it past expiration date? Are you using refrigeration? What drugs do you buy? If I buy antibiotics, do they expire? The solar plant has to be made of resitant materials so I don't need to repair it every time, anyone has made somethiing like that? Can water be recycled from rain ? Did someone made any water collecting system? How? Also whom will you sell the gold and silver if the collapse will kill a lot of people from starvation and a lot will be jobless and hungry???

Simmer down a little. It sounds like you are freaking out.

Just take some time and read through the various threads. Most if not all your questions will be answered.

Go take a yoga class. All this will be here when you get back and your mind will be clearer.

Panic is not a strategy.

Ah, stage 1, I remember it well.

First, run around the room screaming and yelling like a crazed animal.
This will alleviate the stress a bit.

Second, when you are done with that go to the planning forum and learn how to grow your own food. Peak or no peak this is a great life skill. You can live in a cave for all eternity if you know how to grow your own food. Ask questions, there are no stupid questions.

Third, precious metals has made a large run and I wouldn't dive into it whole heartedly, this will be just as useless as cash if peak hits hard.
Cash was king, but now food will rule.

Fourth, create support by planting the seed in friends and families heads. They don't have to believe in peak, but if you make them aware, they will come on board to your survival plan when the time comes.

Fifth, diversify from oil, period. Solar, wood, propane, nat gas(however, this one is next, keep that in mind).

Sixth, once you become a master gardener and have told everybody go to the open discussion and hang out with us weirdos. Laughing

The first thing I did was MARVEL at how utterly inept and incompetent our politicians and current political systems are.

Second, I MARVELED at how ignorant the masses of sheeple are.

Third, I found this website and MARVELED at how a small number of people can rise above the ubiquitous bullshit toward transcending the doomed wasteland that has enveloped virtually all of my friends, relatives, teachers, coworkers, and fellow citizens.

Cool down as Joel suggested, have a beer and watch something stupid on the Tube of you choice.

Then read each post Here.

Then read each of the posts Here.

Then make up your your 5 rules and your plan.

Then go work it.

Ask for any advice here and take what seems handy.

A lot of us that have lived through this this thing for a few years have finally figured out that the problems that we had before Peak Oil, are, strangely enough, the same ones that we had before it.

If you read some of the permaculture stuff that will give you some ideas about a way forward. It's a small solution right now but it can be scaled up if enough people want to look positively at the future.

Actually, stage 1 is usually denial. This sounds more like...stage 3 (bargaining) or something.

Weird, my brother in law told me about peak in 1999 or 2000, can't quite remember. I just said,...yeah that sounds about right. Then I played with my dog, for a while. Then I went to sleep.

It's not like an extra-terrestrial invasion. That would panic me a bit.

I flew in a 3 passenger float plane for the second time, the other day. It zoomed up about 500 feet, throttled back and then fell about 15 feet through the air, as it was windy. Now that scared me a bit, but not enough to stop me from really enjoying the rest of the trip, as it turned out to be smoother than expected, after the initial drop.

Peak oil, didn't elicit much of any reaction from me, as it was not unexpected. The drop in the plane was completely unexpected, so it was different.

You'll get used to the idea, and it won't have the same impact. Relax.

I have to ask the author of the original post...had you never imagined resource depletion as a serious problem before?

Ah, "comin' forward with the side-stick". The world seemed so simple to a child of the 70s. The future seemed so wide open with possibilities.

I've found myself getting very nostalgic lately, but I don't know if it's just because of me easing into my late 30s or that it's my way of retreating into peakoil denial. Probably a combination of both.

Freaking? Yoga?? What the heck!!!
Are you guys watching oil prices???
I thought it will do a correction to 80... NO WAY!
I thought it will do a correction to 115 after hitting 127 ... NO WAY!
It is not going down! And do you know what is going to happen when it crosses 150 level? A huge spike to 200! Thhaaaats when you will see the panic. Thaaats when you will see all the yoga teachers in the supermarket buying food. And thats when oil is goning to stay at 170-180, but no less.
There is a high probability that China will do something after the olympics, like unload a lot of their reserves, however the dollar will continue to falling and one day (which is estimated to be somewhere around 2012) you wake up in the morning and find out the dollar is worth nothing and another currencies affected. I am sorry you but you have NO TIME LEFT! Is it "you do it now", or you gonna hit yourself in the head for watching and not acting. The probability that prices are going to lower is almost zero, so you will not lose anything buying toilet paper, soap, some electric engine, I dont know, whatever you will need in the future.
According to my calcs, in a very very pessimistic scenario you have like 6 month, for building your reserves you will need at least for the next 10 years. If not, you have 1 year. But no more!
Sorry for yoga teachers. And thanks to those who posted concrete answers.
