If you are a Peak Oil newb, then please heed the following . . .

Please DO NOT make your first post a "there is no problem, we have plenty of oil, alternatives are available, there's a big oil conspiracy, some guy heard 30 years ago that there's more oil in Alaska than there are moon rocks on the moon, oil is made at the core of the earth so there's a limitless supply, it's speculation that's driving up the price, we just need to drill more, and so on and on and on."

EVERY ONE of those incorrect assertions has been debated extensively on this site.

If you believe that any of the above listed items are true, then spend a few hours searching this site and reviewing the posts that have already been made on this issue.

If you make the choice to make your first post read . . .

"Peak Oil is not true because . . ."

you will out yourself as a know-nothing newb and you will be soundly, intellectually, beaten down.

You've been warned.

True, all the arguments have already been argued. Let's hope the new members don't try to rehash too many of the same arguments and theories.

But ouch. Using the term 'newbs' isn't exactly a friendly way to welcome new members to this forum. We all had to start learning about peak oil at some point. No question is too dumb to ask. As Aaron said, we should play nice with the influx of new members.

But on the other hand, I hope Peakoil.com doesn't get flooded with cornucopians. Maybe your warning can apply to them. Very Happy

I didn't mean "newb" in a bad way.

If you're new to something, you're a newb, simple as that.

And if you're 100 pounds overweight, you are fat, simple as that.

Both conditions can be remedied with time and effort.

It's too late Drifter.

I've already responded to 4 or 5 posts from 1st time posters who come in with various reasons why we're all missing it.

Number 1 reason so far . . .

"Big Oil".

Jeez.

This is going to be an ugly 10 years, as fat and stupid J6P fights to the death for the belief that, in fact, we don't have to change.

Newb = Someone who is new. Abbreviation of newbie.
N00b/noob = Someone who is needlessly stupid.

You can use the term "newb" without negative connotation, though depending on context, negative connotation can be conveyed.

The second, however, is an exclusively derogatory term.

Darn it, Cashmere, how are we going to get someone to top the fool who advocated sending tanker ships to Jupiter to harvest methane with you chasing them off?

And to advocate someone do a little reading and educate themselves a bit before trumpeting forth with some purported solution? Why, that's so incredibly over-the-top I hardly know what to say.

(Sigh)

I have a feeling that the moderators are not going to look the other way as they did before regarding trolls posting on this forum. It's getting too crowded to ignore them.

Around 2003 there was this really cool sport-touring website (motorcycles). We had a nice small group and had a lot of fun. I even went to the 1st ever National in the Black Hills. Within a couple of years the site had grown to the point where it started to suck and became unmanageable. Will the same thing happen here?

Welcome to anyone who is new to the site.

Please use the same good manners you would use when visiting anywhere for the first time.

You may want to spend some time reading old posts and many of the excellent links that are constantly being provided to peak oil-related material.

This topic has a lot more moving parts than most people initially imagine.

From the general to the particular.

Imagine that two people live in an area the size of Alaska; one is on the Western side, the other resides on the Eastern side. Is there any need for laws regarding noise? Will anyone care if one of them decides to act strangely?

Now switch the question. If these two people each live in small apartments next to each other, and surrounded by thousands of others packed into a small space, will their individual acts grate on others? Will laws evolve to address these issues?

Same here. Crowding will have its effect. Now add in fear, panic, and anger - not only amongst the N00bs, but among most who find themselves immersed in an economic, social, and political environment that is degrading. Perhaps rapidly degrading. Moderation may well have to change its character. Please note that I say this as an individual, and merely as speculation.

We will have, in microcosm, the same problems we discuss with regard to the greater world. We will face a choice between anarchy and imposed order, or some middle path as yet undefined and undetermined.

Welcome to an interesting experiment.

Cool

Another point to remember regarding new viewers/posters...this site is "PeakOil.com." Not only does it regularly show up in the top five results from SE's, but, as the domain name industry would put it, "peakoil.com" is the "category-killer" domain name for this particular niche (peak oil). Regardless of content (which is extensive and generally of a high quality), this site will de facto be considered the main "Peak Oil" site on the internet because of its name/URL alone.

So, anyone who's got a beef with peak oil theory--maybe it doesn't fit in with their default worlfd view, etc--and needs to express their opinion on the matter will make PeakOil.com among their first must-post stops.

As we ride over the peak to the paradigm-shifting decline and "peak oil" becomes one of the most common terms in the English language, the traffic here will explode in an inverse of the decline slope.

The moderators will definitely have their hands full.
