Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned Wednesday that the world faced an era-defining oil "shock" that required urgent action, as European leaders struggled to contain growing protests over soaring fuel prices.
"It is now understood that a global shock on this scale requires global solutions," Brown wrote in The Guardian newspaper.

Record oil prices of around 135 dollars a barrel have contributed to protests worldwide over the rise in fuel and food costs, with fishermen and truck drivers taking the lead in Europe, blocking ports and road access to oil depots.

"However much we might wish otherwise, there is no easy answer to the global oil problem without a comprehensive international strategy," Brown said, adding that the problem should be made a "top priority" at the EU summit next month and the gathering of G8 leaders in July.

"The way we confront these issues will define our era," he said.

Good job fishermen and truck drivers. That'll teach em to allow a non-renewable resource to run out.

Im visiting the UK right now and watching the BBC as I write this. The news item with Brown was whitewashed badly with zero information about the quotes you put above. Definitely a spin job meant to placate the sheep.

BBC: Brown urges increased oil supply

BBC wrote:
Gordon Brown has urged oil industry leaders to come up with ideas for improving supplies as fuel costs soar.

Pathetic.

BBC wrote:
The government has announced moves to increase North Sea oil production, but Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks said they would have no impact on fuel prices.

And this is why:

BBC wrote:
The areas are expected to start operating in the first half of next year with an estimated production rate of up to 50,000 barrels of oil a day at their peak and a total output of 50 million barrels.

Mr Hutton also unveiled plans for new oil and gas fields to be carved out of unprofitable parts of around 30 existing fields, which could see additional daily production of 20,000 barrels of oil.

Fighting the 8% curve in the government's own energy reviews with that?

BBC wrote:
Mr Wicks... dismissed suggestions the announcement was a gimmick designed to distract attention from the political row over fuel prices.

Writing in the Guardian ahead of the talks, the prime minister said there was no quick fix to the "third great oil shock".

Oil prices have soared almost 40% this year alone on the back of a weaker US dollar and growing fears over the imbalance between tight supply and rampant demand.

Twilight, most people don't know the difference between 50 million and 50 billion barrels, much less the sad history of North Sea petroleum production.

Show them the curve though and they'll get it quick. Pretty pictures always work Razz

Governments and Nations need to wise up to the hard facts of energy depletion. When the peak is reached it is irreversible. The North Sea peaked in the year 2000 for Great Britain. It is time to move on and prepare for the power down. England is hugely overpopulated beyond what is produced domestically. The BNP is the only political organization to recognize this. England needs to act before the horrors that have never been seen before in this land set themselves in motion.

Here is Brown's opinion piece in The Guardian.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote:
The cause of rising prices is clear: growing demand and too little supply to meet it both now and - perhaps of even greater significance - in the future.

Quote that whenever someone blames speculators.

Best comment I have seen all day.

I was going to say something about how the government's only response is to talk about what they are going to do with our money instead of what we are going to have to do ourselves, but that sounds more snappy.

The level of knowledge exhibited by those in power in the US and UK about the state of world oil reserves in 2008 seems as abyssmal as their level of knowledge about WMDs in Iraq in 2004.

It would have been great to hear a politician utter that when it mattered ... about 10 years ago.

Upcoming statement: "Nobody anticipated the finiteness of the oil supply."

I get the impression it's the first time that Brown has actually considered that oil is finite; at least in terms rate of supply. His "plan" to increase North Sea production does suggest that he hasn't yet grasped the idea that the resource itself is limited. It's a start I guess. Rolling Eyes
