As I have told you before in another thread, not all of us "whales" have a choice. Some became disabled and medications and lack of ability to exercise caused weight gain. You say it makes you sick; no, you are already sick. Some of us are doing all we can as far as prepping for PO. Some of us are armed when we leave the house as in today's economy we are seen as easy targets for muggers.
Before you continue to be so insensitive, I would suggest you live a day as a disabled person. I have lived your life as a strong upright working man, let's see you live mine as a disabled person. I will be legally disabled in 4 months so I guess you can retract a little of that hate. Not EVERYONE who is using the electric chairs are disabled. Its like seeing the ppl park in the handicap spots and walk in better than I can. What with that?
I just know what the numbers say. Diabetes will break the american medical community and america too. MOST due to over eating.
Did you get the info on Byetta I suggested for weight loss?
I was sposed to be disabled in 94 but kept working a horribly physical job til now just due to tough nuts. hah..
Doctors told me I was done back then. I showed them. Went today and the doc said this is it. Wont be working after December any more and I am only 50. So I am on YOUR side but PLEASE, see the other side too.

Another thing that causes obesity in so many people is the high-fructose corn syrup they put in just about everything...that stuff is *made* to put on weight. And why is that? So people will eat more food!
To address this problem, we need to go after the junk-food makers just like we did the tobacco companies...hit 'em with extreme taxes, force them to run "public service" ads and just plain make junk food not such a fun thing to eat anymore. And ban high-fructose corn syrup...that stuff is practically poison.
That being said, however, I just don't understand the logic of an overweight person going back to get a huge milkshake after having the burger and fries...don't they know how many calories that is?? While I realize that some folks don't mind being obese (or they'd not eat so darned much), but getting diabetes and making health care even more expensive for the rest of us, that just kinda blows. Especially to someone like me who firmly believes that universal care is the only way to go. But before we can even think about that, we all have to take some sort of responsibility for our health.
Shoot, I oughta be out there getting some exercise myself in instead of being here on Peak Oil...hehe. _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

There is corn fructose in a lot of food.
DONT EAT THAT crap>..duh
No one is holding a gun to your head. ITs not the food manuf. fault anymore than the tabacco company or liquour companies. TAKE
some personal responsibility here.
God god, there is enough info out there to know what to eat, how much and when. Not that hard.
The fast food made me do it. GOD. i cant take much more.
Same ole thing for americans. Its not my fault. Please pass the chips, SOMEONE needs to do something about that...please pass the PIE, SOMEONE help me, please pass the ice cream and cake.
A serving is ONE CUP. NOT ONE BIG PLASTIC BIG GULP CUP!!!
A plate is 8"
Half green veggies,
Quarter meat, lean
Quarter of it starch.
NO DESSERT, no salad dressing, no dipping sauce, no katchup, no BBQ sauce, no NOTHING. GET IT> hahaha
I know its boring, but so is laying in a nursing home due to a stroke or your weight. SO is sitting at home as you dont feel like getting out, so is having to have a huge van cus you dont fit in a smaller car.

I'm a foreigner in the USA and grew up with hardly any
processed food. It was a bland diet but healthy.
What I observe here:
overweight people and ultra lean fitness freaks.
Many people do not cook/prepare food from scratch (this is a uniquely american expression - I never knew that there was another way)
Corn syrup in a lot of refined food
A constant need for flavoring/taste without thinking what is in these jars/packets:
Excessive use of pop/soda and all those bottles and cans produce so much garbage: what is wrong with water ! or H20 with a splash of real lemon, or homemade iced tea with less sugar or ... no sweeteners at all?
I have found that everything is here to eat a reasonable diet if you just think and plan, and it can actually cost less than the packaged junk.
we make our own homemade lemonade and iced tea ...cutting out the sweeteners.
I make bean dishes (soaking beans etc..) which can be reheated. The mexican section of the supermarket is great for sauces, salsas etc.
why not make salad dressing: oil and vinegar, salt, pepper (flavor with mustard, garlic etc...)
It's all personal choice... either eat junk food or not... the alternatives are there.

I agree - I lived in an urban area in Canada and moved to a Rural area in upstate NY and noticed one thing immediately - the serving sizes were much larger. Fast Food restaurants served the Canadian large as a medium and so on. Sit-down restaurants had meals where the entree came on one plate (covering it) with pasta and salad on separate plates - for example a chicken breast was the entire breast both sides of the chicken not one side (3000+ calories). I think this adds pressure to overeat when combined with the lack of options for exercise in day-to-day life such as walking (not possible in most locations) greatly increases the odds of being overweight which was evident in a large portion of the population.

OK I have to put in my .02 cents worth. I work in a grocery store so I imagine I'm part of the problem. (I told the manager that and she said, "no, you're OK, you work in produce".
SOOO many people are morbidy obese. I have people every day ask me to get them food two feet away because they can't reach it and have lost the willingness to try. This is not a medical condition.
My co-worker (who has listened to me rant about fat people for four years) has gone on a diet the last two months and lost forty pounds already. He weighed 320 when he started. He also has started reading about PO and making some preps, mostly medication. His mom weighs 500-600 pounds and has to go to the hospital pretty much on a weekly basis because of various health problems. The ambulance cannot pick her up so whenever she has to go to the hospital he has to load her in his truck. It must be humiliating but he never says anything.
The section eight people that live two doors down had the paramedics, fire engines, and police over at their house again yesterday. I watched from the front yard; it took seven very large guys to load her into the back of the ambulance.
It occured to me that obesity is a very, very big business here in the US.

I kind of think it is. I think many many people are depressed in their lives (situational depression) and self-medicate with food. It's a terrible feedback loop. Not getting enough exercise (watching TV, sitting at work, etc), they get depressed, they eat to feel better, gain weight, feel less like moving, get more depressed because now they're "fat", eat more to feel better, etc etc. It simply isn't "natural" for humans to be as sedentary as people have become in our modern society. Being sedentary and eating a poor diet (high in simple carbohydrates, low in nutrition) is horrible for peoples mental and physical health.
It's not their "fault," because our entire society is geared toward sitting around and eating lots of bad food. It takes special motivation to fight against this. Yes, some people are able to exercise and watch their diets, but many/most people just don't have that kind of gumption when everything is pushing them toward sitting there and eating. Many of the foods they eat are habit forming because they contain corn syrup which causes an addictive sugar rush, and then plummet in blood sugar. It's quite hard to avoid this ingredient in processed foods.
It's really tragic.

Americans really are astonishingly fat, as a rule. I can hardly believe my eyes when I'm out in public or flick past the "reality" shows on TV. All those giant asses and hanging-over-the belt guts! How do they stand it? I was somewhat overweight, briefly, as a young adult and remember how very uncomfortable it felt. Plus, it makes you old, ugly, and sick.
Ludi, I don't entirely buy the "it's not their fault" argument. One can't if one believes in individual responsibility.
Maybe people will all be put on an involuntary diet, soon. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

I agree it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves. But I also see how easy it is for most people to accede to the culture they're in. I'm getting plump in my middle age (15 pounds gain over about eight years). I could do to lose 20 pounds or so. But it would take great willpower to do it. You have unusual willpower, Heineken, so it might be difficult for you to identify with those who don't have your strength of character. I'm kind of a slug. I eat a relatively healthy diet compared to the average American. If I ate the average American diet of processed foods, I would probably be a blob. My latest blood work came back "perfect" - low cholesteral, no hint of diabetes, no thyroid problems. I've started walking with my husband and the dog in the evening. _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow..." - jboogy

I'm really glad to hear you and your husband (and dog!) have taken up a walking program, and that your "numbers" are so good.
I guess I agree that since being fat has now become the norm, it's very hard for even a reasonable person to escape the blubbery clutches. For example, if most students in a high school are overweight to some degree, those powerful social barriers against obesity have vanished.
One of my main reasons for not being fat is that it doesn't feel good, as I said earlier. For me, that was all the motivation I ever needed to get trim and stay that way. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

I think there is something to what both of Hein and Ludi are addressing. My 64y/o Dad has a deformed shoulder from Polio. He recieved a 4F for the Vietnam draft, yet the old fart works like a beast. Together we can put in a 9-12 hour day of fixing fence, repairing washouts or cutting trees. While he is slowing down in his 60's, the guy has a sense of stubborness to accomplish tasks.
I think as Ludi coined it "Unusual willpower" will be required as the sun sets on the age of cheap oil. Especially if we make the move back towards a agrarian society. In fact I put a slightly higher value on it than intellegence or natural strength. To be honest with ourselves, we have gotten soft. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket

I agree. When I read about what folks used to be able to do in the way of work in earlier times (and in other societies now) I'm amazed. We are complete wimps compared to those folks. It just won't be possible for most people raised up in a sedentary society to match the strength of those who had been doing heavy manual labor since childhood. _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow..." - jboogy

You know what I am talking about. It's finding a fallen tree on a fence or a busted gate after a 10 hour day. There may be cursing but there is no bitching or complaining. You simply get out of the truck and work past dark. Even in that situation we still have it easier than the pioneers had it. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket
