Looks like China is not taking "peak oil" lying down! We can learn from these guys!

A 200 MWe high temperature reactor will be the safest nuclear power plant ever designed and built. High temperature reactors can be adapted to use thorium for fuel and the plan is for factory mass produced reactors. Two year construction times and mass production driving costs down to less than half the cost of the first units. China sees these as supplemental reactors to the big reactors. They will be used in smaller cities and towns and by factories for generating industrial heat. Also, they are looking to use heat for hydrogen generation, desalination and coal liquification (at least that would be cleaner than straight coal burning).
Two Year Construction Times!!!

They also make quality toasters. In 10 minutes. For $5 a piece. Mine lasted 2 months. Made in China baby

Seriously, though, imagine how good the Chinese would be at covering it up if anything went wrong.
I'll bet the Chinese could make Chernobyl look like "Nuclear Taxicab Confessions."

| Agreed. How long do Chinese toasters last? Not long. And when they break, you toss it out and buy a new one. But when a Chinese nuc reactor breaks and melts down, it ain't pretty. No extended warranty for that baby. |

I know you're just quoting the article with your headline, but it is quite misinformed. The US had a High-Temperature Gas Reactor (330 MWe) operating commercially from 1977 to 1989 at Fort Saint Vrain, Colorado, and Germany had the THTR (300 MW) which operated for a few years in the 80s. Both partially Thorium cycle.
It's not *new*, although it's good to see someone is pushing ahead with it.

Look at recently high flying hyper chinese stocks like SOLF, SINO and GRO and tell me this ain't reeking of some pre-olympics hype.
Sad truth is any fission reactor consumes more energy in Oil than it will ever give back in electricity, for everything from the construction effort required to need in derivatives including energy to commute in/out the workers.
And we're about as close to building a thermonuclear FUSION reactor today as the Mayas were to building a FISSION reactor in the year 600. Sucks to be still here when we can have so much energy over there.... |

| You guys have no f'in clue as to the scale of what has been going on in China over the past few years... I try pretty hard to keep up with Chinese economic statistics and news from China that is published by ex-pats -- as western news coverage omits all the good stuff. Think about it. The resource consumption in that country is truly awesome. They are building like crazy. On a scale far bigger than even the U.S in its heyday. Their gas is still under $3/gallon too... |

Yes they are, and they are making the same mistakes. Only we mostly didn't know how bad it was at the time. You also need to remember that china is still a communist country. With a partially command directed economy. Thats why the gas is cheap. Don't get me wrong, china is a power house, 85% of what they make is for internal consumption. Nothing in our history books to compare this to. But odds are they are going to screw up in a big way also.

I have been to China a few times and those are thoughts exactly. You can't imagine how badly they are screwing things up. They are building huge road systems and megacities that I can't compare to anything I have seen in the States or Europe(and I have seen NYC,Paris and Berlin).but without any mass transit!
Of course once the government in Beijing realizes what's going on I think they will do a better job of dealing with the situation than the US. They're communists and they will do whatever it takes to get rail and mass transit up once they realize how important it is.
Also the US is a huge super importer that doesn't produce very much(at least relative to how much it consumes). China on the other hand is a super exporter and they have things the oil producing nations want. When everyone realizes how that the dollar is nothing more than glorified wall paper they will be in a better position to deal with oil producing countries (I didn't say good just better).
China's main strength will be its ability to mobilize people and act like a true command economy.
Although I don't think the Chinese are doing a good job of managing peak oil I think they are doing a better job than the US.

I've heard China has poured more concrete to in the last decade then America has poured, ever.
I dont know if its true, or maybe I remembered it wrong but point is China is building like mad.
As for the price of their fuel, well government price fixing helps with that.....Wait till the Olypmics are over, they stop the subsidies and prices skyrocket. Then it'll be interesting to watch.
