I was just thinking: wouldn't it be nice to have a social network website a la Facebook and MySpace but then for serious people willing to team up to develop local post-peak communities? Ideas, actual resources and plans to streamline PO-living could be shared.
Social networks can spread rapidly, and would spread the PO word faster than a few forums.
They're also pretty easy to create. The software is available. All we need is a gentle person willing to put some time and money into this. You get the money back very quickly, once you have enough members. _________________ The Beginning is Near!

i guess it depends on the execution, the details.
Myspace has so many ads that a MySpace link is not one i often click on. we can do so much better than that.
but it is nice to meet people who are not taking a "see no evil, hear no evil" approach to Peak Oil/ 9-11/ life in Modern Times.
i see one of our members at one of the more high-traffic computer websites trying to coach people about Peak Oil. but i don't want to blow his cover so i'll leave it at that. _________________ http://www.LASIKdecision.com/ ~ Health Warning about LASIK Eye Surgery

Not to be rude...
...but web-based "communities" are a crock of raw sewage.
"Community" is a dead word. It has been robbed of its original meaning. It is now a warm and fuzzy marketing buzzword, designed to make "folks" think of quaint-picket-fence-surrounded pockets of like-minded humanity (perhaps we should call it a "pixel-fence"), woodsmoke gently wafting out of virtual chimneys.
Bunk.
A community is a local food-based network. A community is something that doesn't require electricity. A community eats others' goods and smells others' smells. They make music and love and resentments.
The basis of a community is soil and compost, not plastic and electrons.

Yeah, but this is entertainment for me, and I make no promises, offer no platitudes, and once this pile of electronic junk sits useless on my desk post-Olduvai collapse, I have neighbors, cows, fiddles and compost to rely on. _________________ "By the time individuals discover that remaining resources will not be adequate for the next generation, the next generation has already been born. Start cultivating.
Even selling a dozen eggs to a neighbor is the beginning of a new community worth ten thousand web "pages" of blather. _________________ "By the time individuals discover that remaining resources will not be adequate for the next generation, the next generation has already been born. " David Price

Having said which, chickens are a pain in the a** when they get into your veg plot & wreck everything.
Yep.
I had to take the time to surround the gardens with fences. It's well worth it.

Yep I did that too. 6ft works, 4 ft doesn't. Next time I'll get it right...
In my experience chickens prefer lettuce, exposed toes, radish & salad sprouts & also have a particular preference for carefully raked-up mulch. Bugs they seem to studiously avoid due to the superior diet clearly available around them...
But the eggs are good (grin).

Sure, but you forgot one crucial aspect: human communication.
It started with "umph, umph", then our brains grew and we said "umphidumphy, umphidumphy".
Later, when we walked up more straight still, we used drums to signal messages to each other. Also, we shouted a lot ("big animal coming").
Next we invented paintings and scribbled symbols. See Lascaux.
Then came alphabets and letters. Still scribbled in clay tablets, it's true.
Much, much later we invented the pigeon post, the fire-tower internet, and eventually the telegraph, the telephone and the internet.
It's a natural evolution. Nothing evil.
There's really no need to go back to our "umph, umph" era in order to survive the post-oil age. Is there?
It's a matter of efficiency. We can use the internet for as long as it lasts.
I don't believe that growing chickens and trading them with your neighbor, right now, is the smartest thing to do. You can get more out of that chicken by offering it on e-bay to the neighbor you forgot to talk to in all your paranoid phases. Just my two cents. _________________ The Beginning is Near!

For a local PO community you must use local networks.
Organize a gathering in the local library, in a park, in a pub in your house. Start a local community garden....
This is much more difficult than writing something anonymous in the web.
It's a tool to get people to meet in real life, not a tool to use the internet as a substitute for real community. _________________ Peak oil is sort of like a mental Everlasting Gobstopper, except it tastes like ass and you can't get it out of your mouth.

Chickens...did some say chickens??? We have chickens... some in this batch are 7 years old. Problem? not really. They have their 40 x 40 foot exterior run area full or well fertilized plants and grasses to pick at. Overhead ropes to prevent eagles and other birds of prey from dropping in... A secured fence dog kennel to roost in and an interior laying room in the barn (older metal tool storabe building. They sure seem happy to see us evey morning as we usually bring a few scrapes to them on the way to the barn. I also wrapped the entire 4 foot high plank fence around their run area in chicken wire and ran a shock fence wire 4 inches above it. Each chicken which tries to jump over the top (only once) lands on the shock wire and well grounded fence and... well they fall back inside and scream for awhile...lay an egg and never do that again. Works great for racoons etc. which try to climb the fence. They get 100% full power and run off screaming. I turn the German Shepherds after it and follow up with the shotgun. Find that varmit in a tree with dogs under it and.... trying not to pollute I later pick up the 12 gauge buck shot casing on my way home.
Eggs, we just give away the surplus to the distant neighbors when we see them or the UPS guy, mail carrier, etc. The garden is well fenced in like manner and in a crisis we would turn the chickens loose during the day to forage more, but not until then as it is too much hastle.
Community? We are trying hard to open communications with other smart well prepared folks in the Idaho region to... do much more than post comments about how bad things are or how to make tea from some weed. Now weed tea is fine in a crisis if...you have somewhere safe to gather and drink it. We are people of action ( have the proof) not just empty words.....
