|

| Quote: | Remember Volkswagen's 'one-litre' car, capable of one litre per 100km, or a scarcely credible 282mpg? Well VW has approved top-secret plans to build the limited-edition fuel miser in 2010, CAR Online can reveal. The tiny, grey cigar-shaped curiosity was a triumphal hit at the 2002 annual meeting in Hamburg and now – finally – it's heading for production.
At the time the chairman of VW's supervisory board predicted that the super-economical two-seater would go into production as soon as the cost of the carbonfibre monocoque dropped from €35,000 (£28,000) to €5000 (£4000), which he estimated would happen in 2012. Now the VW 1L will hit the market two years ahead of schedule, in 2010. |

He raises a fun point. A lot of Fibre resins are Oil based and cost a ton.
I wonder what will bring the cost of carbon fibre so far? |

Maybe it's related to patent "costs"? _________________

| Seems pretty pointless to have so expensive a car only to save fuel. Its little more than a posh motorbike. |

People are always screaming bloody murder about how cars should get smaller and go carbon fiber. Here it is, folks. Learn to love it because economy of scale won't kick in unless early adopters come to it in droves. _________________ Peak oil is sort of like a mental Everlasting Gobstopper, except it tastes like ass and you can't get it out of your mouth.

Its little more than a posh motorbike. | With fuel prices where they are in Europe, at ~10,000 miles per year it's ~$2,000 less per year to run compared to a motorbike at ~50mpg. Over the course of the vehicle's likely life that's a ~$60,000 difference in fuel costs. Unlike a motorbike it provides climate control, ABS, ESP, and huge safety advantages... | Quote: | | Despite its small size and light weight, Volkswagen says the 1-Litre-Car is as safe as a GT sports car registered for racing. With the aid of computer crash simulations, the car was designed with built-in crash tubes, pressure sensors for airbag control, and front crumple zones. Its aluminium fuel tank is located in a protected area behind the passengers. As well, the 1-Litre-Car includes ABS and ESP (electronic stability program). |
Spending ~$30-40k in the states on a 4,000lb vehicle gets this kind of protection. I suppose the question is do we want the car to crumple around us, or do we want to crumple w/ the car? _________________

In the future, the only private vehicles running will be even more extreme than the 1L. This is only a good start.
Look for even more radical ultra-streamlined single-seat commuter cars to begin appearing within six or eight years. In fifteen years they could comprise half the vehicles on the road. _________________ "Thank you for attending the oil age. Unless it can be considered a motorcycle, I doubt it will be allowed on US roads. More's the pity... but at least the price falls within the realm of the possible. _________________ When somebody makes a statement you don't understand, don't tell him he's crazy. It's about a good as the Aptera. I think I would rather have an Aptera, because it's a completely new idea in a car.
Since the Aptera is a three wheeler it's legal to drive as a motorcycle.

It could be on US roads w/ funky looking 5mph bumpers, or whatever that standard requires. AFAIK most cars in Europe could meet US crash standards, it's just that the cost of crash/emissions testing is too much to consider bringing an econobox with low margins over. At least that's how it seemed to be in the past. _________________

Many years ago a neighbour had one of these, A BMW Isetta bubble car. 236cc 2 stroke. The British cars had right-hand drive with the door hinged from the right hand side of the car and the steering column moved across to the right as well. Right-hand drive meant that the driver AND the engine were on the same side, so a 60 lb (27 kg) counterweight was added to the left side to compensate.
Those were the days, LOADS of fun !!!!!!
