If "it's bunker time" why the fark do you care about the price of gold? You evolved some enzyme that lets you digest the stuff?

Found this while doing my news rounds this morning:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7495717.stm

Very close the Cuban approach of turning empty city spaces into productive gardens.

It hath already been foretold, by landcape urbanist and Stalking Detroit editor, Charles Waldheim.

Quote:
In a study he conducted with Marili Santos-Munne, Waldheim used a 1988-1989 vacant land survey to suggest new uses for abandoned land in Detroit. The city's plans for the lots called for their "return to nature," as one administrator put it, meaning the areas would be fenced off, have their municipal services terminated, and their inhabitants relocated. Guided by an idea that underlay the Stalking Detroit project, which is that practicing architects can do research, and through this research, generate new perspectives on urban conditions, Waldheim and Santos-Munne approached the depopulated areas as a landscape project, and came up with several propositions. One called for creating migrant worker homesteads, which would provide this population with inexpensive housing as well as access to urban agriculture and forestry. The research team also considered the environmental rehabilitation of these areas—a viable option, keeping in mind that it could require half a century to rid the land of toxic waste—as well as the possibility of developing large-scale agricultural projects on the abandoned landscapes. Another proposal, which received chuckles from the audience, was to make Detroit a center for arson investigation.
