but in the meantime whilst we await Iran's answer as to whether we should start WW3 or not, the anticipation may well take it past $150.

If it does drop, the only backlash we will see is the people who love their huge SUV's and Gas-Guzzlers will think they've been given an excuse to go back to driving them.
Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens.

In case of a USA-Iran war, world economy would collapse in my opinion. Oil markets are so tight since we are post peak that a so huge event would precipitate events.
I remember US destroyed USSR economy by asking SA to increase its oil production. Perhabs their plan this time is to do the opposite in order to destroy Chindia economy with 500 to 1000$ oil, then later (say 2010) going back to business as usual while Chindia would be in the middle of a gigantic civil war.
In this case, oil would collapse to 2 digits price.
What is certain is that China, India and many other countries won't like US to go to Iran. Mankind could then end in an awesome thermonuclear war, but since US government knows their economy is doomed anyway in the short term, they don't have much to loose (in their opinion). It's a bet on a bright future!

Part of the plan might be to ratchet up sanctions until either Iran complies or does something incredibly stupid. If Iran lashes out militarily, the US can always say they tried diplomacy and didn't want this war with Iran. A slightly better outcome then an preemptive attack by the US and Israel.

I was thinking the same thing; "we tried diplomacy and it didn't work, even went as far as to try to open a new embassy, blah blah, blah..."

We followed along with the EU. Perhaps if say Italy or Turkey recognizes they will soon be in Iran's missle reach it becomes a NATO threat. US will NOT go into Iran alone. We won't get the UN to do anything but I think any strike will be NATO/France backed.
