Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Great web site and it contains a lot more than I originally thought. However I think it needs a bolder front page stating - This is what peak oil is and this is what we do.

I actually surfed on by a couple of times before becoming a member just because it didn't seem to have what I was looking for in the first 10 seconds.

Keep up the good work.

Admins and Mods thank you.

"Life results from the non-random selection of randomly generated replicators"

Have you ever read anything about recursive processes and/or strange attractors?

You know, Bobbyald has a point. An entry page with a Flash animation would have some advantages....

Admin, Aaron,

Didn't we get roasted back in June for these kinds of enhancements or is there too much lead in my small-town drinking water?

Maybe there's a compromise in its manner of presentation. I know we were testing other designs a while back (different software it might have been); is there anything in the works other than what we're doing with PCI?

Those with dial-up would be gone for good before the animation finished loading.

What you really need is a "what is peak oil?" hyperlink in big letters right about where is says "Welcome to PeakOil.com" that leads newcomers to a not too scary introduction to the subject of peak oil. Matt Savinar's home page gets right to the point of introducing peak oil, but does it in such a scary way that most peoples denial shields go up immediately and they write him off as a crackpot.

Your site is great for those of us aware of the issue but needs to do more to get the attention of first time visitors.

Flash is a bad idea for the front page... however I think the idea of having some more static introductory content on the front page would be a good idea. Maybe just 200 words or so that says what peak oil is, and explains how this site collates peak oil related news stories and has a vibrant forum etc... If no ones written anything by the weekend I'll have a go.

Point well taken. Broadband hubris is all too seductive.

On the other hand, a visually enticing page can be created with small graphical elements and a tiled background. Some pages tile elements as small as two pixels. Font size and color can be modified to achieve interesting effects with minimal consequences for file size.

I would point out, however, that it is not uncommon to have a link that permits low bandwidth users to skip an introductory page. Cool

my .25 petro-kopek view:

I like the 'low key' approach of this site (no introduction). It's not about convincing people - but having people to discuss. Those who want to find more info, read more will do so.

I agree. I think this site appeals to people who have already been introduced, however minimally, to the Peak Oil concept. I love the simple, visually uncluttered design. When I see a site with a flashy (or Flash) intro page, I usually get irritated. There's enough media trying to grab our attention to sell us things and ideas already. I doubt the kind of person who requires such a sell would be open to the ideas here anyway.

I think Wolf at the Door is a good site for newbies. It has visual appeal without being cluttered, and presents the concepts clearly and without a lot of peripheral information that might turn people off. I wasn't ready for peakoil.com until I'd spent a couple of months reading books and other web sites.

I'm not crazy about the first few paragraphs. It makes it sound like Peak Oil is a fringe concept that very few people believe in. The best way to make people think you are lying is to say, "Honestly, I'm telling you..." There's no need to mention "Urban Legends" and "internet hoaxes." As soon as you do that, it will put the idea in their head that this might be one of those things.

As someone who connects through a cellular modem daily, I hope you'll preserve the quick-loadin' format of this site.
