Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

I live in Thailand and we've had fairly long running conflicts between a corrupt - though democratic-ish - government and what's basically an extra-parliamentary fascist-royalist movement which is trying to overthrow democracy here. Rioting and car bombs in Bangkok today have added to the general air of uncertainty. The area I live has also had a big upsurge in dengue fever recently, which isn't really the birthday present I was looking for this year.

Are the protests increasing? I was in BKK just a few weeks ago (some work for about a week) and it was all pretty quiet. One area with some protesters but very quiet there in the evening. So it seemed very limited. The phuket airport protests were somehow related from what I understood.

It's all kicked off again today. PAD tried to blockade parliament and the riot police the tried to clear them with tear gas. The predictable melee ensued - about a hundred and fifty were injured and one demonstrator lost a leg in a slightly confusing explosion. There was then a car bomb, which killed one and now the army have stuck their oar in support of the police, though I'm not quite sure what they've been doing in the last few hours. Will we have yet another coup? The army have announced that they're "watching" the police, which is somewhat ominous and it's certainly highly possible that the antics of the PAD (who've today killed one policeman, shot and wounded several others, and driven over a bunch of them) will draw out the army and precipitate a military coup. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if I wake up tomorrow morning with tanks on the streets.

We have a surprising number of posters who live in, and travel to Thailand. My relatives are in Minburi, (not sure of the exact spelling) my understanding is that it's pretty tense. Dukkha, please give us more reporting on the ground. _________________ "Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb."

The following is a story about a scenario that I dwell on(don't panic, I wrote this and as far as I know, this story is fake):
Pentagon Takes Over Government and Declares Martial Law
In a extraordinary move today the Pentagon assumed full control over both the White House and Congress. According to a Pentagon Spokesperson, this situation will be maintained until further notice.
According to the spokesperson, private contractors within the Pentagon uncovered documentation that linked the current administration to activities that have bilked the country for trillions of dollars. The plan was to force the country into financial ruin and install a fascist government. The final phase of these plans was initiated about a year ago and would lead to the declaration of Martial Law and the suspension of the November elections.
The spokesperson said that to prevent the White House from completely destroying the country and installing a fascist government, leaders at the Pentagon have assumed control over the White House and Congress. To prevent chaos, the Pentagon has declared Martial Law. And oh by the way, the elections that were to occur in November have been put on hold until further notice.

That's exactly where my wife is at this moment! I just got off the phone with her (we live up-country so I'm a bit out of things) to see what the feeling is. It's all gone relatively quiet for the time being; there's probably less risk of an immediate coup than I had thought but the Queen has now donated money to help pay for the care of those injured by the police today. This is not cool at all. It certainly looks like a fairly clear indication that the demonstrators now have at least some open support from the royal family and this counts for a lot - really a lot - here. It's just too depressing a thought that these clowns might ever get into power. One of their main contentions is that the rural poor are too stupid and ill-educated to be trusted with the vote so they plan to, essentially, remove their vote and have an appointed legislature. It's nothing more than a completely shameless power-grab by a metropolitan elite. I'll post any interesting developments but, if you're interested, have a look at Bangkok Pundit. There's an excellent article at the 20.30 entry.

I trust the military way more than our government right now, so in a way that would be a relief. _________________ Conservation is conservative
