Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Terran, make sure you rotate it about every six months or so. Especially if it's just in the bottles it is put in at the factory. Those bottles degrade over time and will cause bacteria to grow inside. Not sure of the time frame, someone else may correct me but I think it's like 6 months.

Larry and Pops, I for one, am envious of both. Congratulations on your commitment to becoming independent and having taken the steps necessary to get your place up and running. Always keep in mind, if SHTF, my daughter and I are up for adoption. We'll come fully supplied w/ all sorts of supplies, backbone and drive. Just don't have a place to go.

Last week I bought a 72 hour survival kit and supplemented it with some food and clothes. It will be kept in my truck.
I also purchased another dozen freeze dried meals. (5 / 10 year shelf life) I vacuum sealed some more dried goods for my ever growing 1 year supply of food.
Does anyone know....should I vacuum seal vegetable seeds? I have a couple hundred bags of seeds (I'll rotate stock). Will they keep longer if vacuum sealed?
Pops, you mentioned in another post about keeping water in the BLUE 5-gallon water containers, as opposed to clear containers. Why is that?

Algae likes sunlight, once they start growing all sorts of bad things happen, so any opaque container is good – the dark blue is just the recognized color for water so you know what you are grabbing. Diesel is yellow; kerosene is light blue, gasoline is red, etc.
Be sure you store some open pollinated (non-hybrid) seed for your second year forward as hybrid seeds don’t grow the same plant as the parent and may not produce anything at all. _________________ Make a plan and work it:

I just finished a nice good slice of prime rib, which happand to have alot of fat. I saved the fat, cooked it in a beaker, and alot of it melted. I added the right amount of lye,heated it, and it's supposed to convert to soap.
One bad thing about this is it freaking stinks. I got the idea from a friend who made soap with bacon fat.
Another thing I'm doing, I'm stocking canned food under my bed. After that I'm going to stock fuel, in the form of hexamine fuel tablets. _________________ my page:

I also brought two zippo lighters. You need naptha to fuel those lighter, which is derived from oil.Naptha stinks really badly when you light the lighters. I tried using ethyl alcohol to power a zippo, so far no success. My next atempt I'm going to use methyl alcohol. _________________ my page:

Got the “Cold Room” mostly done (still want to put sleepers on the floor with 1-1/2” of rigid insulation and some more in the ceiling).
Working on installing the new wood stove. New stainless steel triple wall chimney – 32’ of it, should last a long time! Doubled ˝” drywall on the entire wall for additional mass, plus outside air kit.
Just as an aside, this old house (100+) will certainly outlive me – it’s framed with full cut oak, studs are 16”OC!
Helped the neighbors put up hay (had a great little bbq down by the river – goofed off for a couple hours and had a few). _________________ Make a plan and work it:
Using fat from leftovers that have been cooked with meat will make it smell off and may affect its willingness to set.
The best (purest) fat for soap comes from around the kidneys when you (or a local butcher) dress a carcase.
BTW for best results dice the fat to say 1/2" cubes and render it slowly in a clean pan over a low heat, then pour it off and let it cool down before using it.

I asked a question on Peakoil.com today. (The question that follows as a matter of fact!)
How long can seeds be stored for most plants? I've heard of archeologists digging up Inca stores of grain and being able to germinate it after all those years, so I suppose that stuff lasts quite a while? Are certain species seeds more likely to expire than others?
Bamboo is just amazing! You can build with it, eat it, use it as fuel, as shade, make paper with it, and NOW you can purify water with it. Love that Bamboo!
